DIY player ratings for Bledisloe 1 - Wallabies and All Blacks

By Patrick Effeney / Editor

The Roar‘s DIY player ratings is back in force, this time for both the Wallabies and the All Blacks after a cracking encounter in Game 1 of the Bledisloe Cup.

Australia may have the Rugby Championship in its hands, but the Bledisloe Cup is still a victory at Eden Park away. As far as distances in rugby go, that’s a fair way.

But to the game, where the Wallabies and All Blacks smashed each other to little bits in the first half, rebuilt all the little bits at half time then managed to play some seriously attractive rugby in the second.

Roarers, it’s up to you guys. What did you make of the game? Who played well? Who was terrible. Your votes will be counted and tallied and released later in the week, in another post.

Today, you’ll be rating both sides, which is an exciting development in DIY player ratings – sure to go down in the history of our ratings system.

Now, the rules, for those who don’t know how DIY player ratings works around these parts.

Here’s how the game works:

1. Fill out the form below, giving a player a rating between 1 and 10.
1.5. Tell me why my process sucks, or why my haircut is bad in the comments section.
2. I collate the votes over the day.
3. Tomorrow, the results will be out, and you all get to see exactly how bad our ratings are, and can lambast me for it.

Fun for the whole family.

Due to popular demand, I’ve put together a brief description of what I think the ratings should reflect. Use it as a guide, rather than a set of rules I stand by rigorously.

1. Had he not played, the team would have been better off. Negatively affected the performance of the side. May God have mercy on his soul.
2. Anonymous. Was he even there?
3. Did some things that you expect a player to be able to do, but did a whole bunch of other things that sucked.
4. Was passable in patches, but not up to standard in a squad of such depth.
5. Performed his role without anything really noticeable happening.
6. Good
7. Pretty good, actually
8. Very good
9. Excellent
10. Might as well have been John Eales

Happy voting everyone!

Matt is going to roll out for Rays next week. I hope the Rays lift their form Or at least stop scoring own goals.

CL should absolutely be in the match day 22. In fact, I believe that he is the best flyhalf option that we have got and certainly the most underrated back in Australian rugby.

Cooper has played much worse in matches before and been rightly roasted

I think the reason White looked SO good this weekend was because of how BAD Phipps looked. Phipps chose to have his snafu's in the worst possible positions on the field, putting the team under real pressure. Foley didn't look great either. I was interested to see how him and Giteau worked together (Foley plays a wide game from 5/8, while Giteau can run a back line). It seemed like both players were looking for the other one to take control, with neither really doing it. Toomua has to be first choice at this point, with Gits at 12. Cooper on the bench to come on for whichever is performing worse. I think the back row combo of Fardy, Hooper and Pocock has to be what goes to the WC. They were well balanced, and were all over the place. Pocock the man of the match, while Hooper gets the play-of-the-day stopping Savea from scoring a certain try (not an easy task for anyone in the world).

If QC had played like Foley, he would be lynched and quartered, and he would deserve it.

If they drop Carter now it will upset several of their senior players. He will come good when it really counts. All great players do.

For #10-12 combo, my money is on either Toomua + Giteau with C.Lealiliifano as reserve or CLL + Giteau with Toomua as back-up. They are all damned good players who can sub into either 10 or 12 with no problem if the situation (injury) demands, also two of them are goal kickers. All 3 of these blokes know defence is tackling around the legs even if its going to hurt. Cooper and Foley think its spelt De Fence, that wooden structure in the back yard, and act accordingly as they become the gateway. Even if Cooper/Foley (and Beale for that matter) have that X-factor in attack (and I haven't really seen that work anyway), you are perpetually pulling someone else out of position to cover for their defensive flaws while they sit back as 2nd or 3rd kick receiver, ie: you are creating holes to cover your selected hole. I'm not too sure if that builds trust within a team. For my money, you put blokes in the team who are not going to be a hole in your wall.

Where can I find the stats? And I'm not being argumentative. I genuinely would like to see the stats.

Cooper usually does make more mistakes with the ball. Thats according to statistics.

That is the ongoing problem, all the scrumhalf options have problems and are equally capable of stupid decision making, they just make different stupid decisions. Nic White justifiably gets lambasted for falling back on the box kick when there is nothing in front of him, but clearing the ball back to nobody, as Phipps has shown on several occasions, is just as costly and as poor a decision. It is reasonable that Phipps gets the nod because of his speed to the breakdown to clear, but if he starts to gets flustered or if his poor passes start creeping in he has to be pulled asap, as he is a total liability at that point.

I don't know why. Foley and QC are both not performing well enough. Why keep swapping them? What was clear from Sat night is that Toomua-Giteau and Kuridrani is our best midfield combination at the moment.

White got all the plaudits, and he deserves high praise for the darting try, but he played about 15 mins and we all know the rubbish he can dish out as well. Just a bit of perspective, that's all. If it's 6 of one between him and Phipps, maybe White gets the nod for his goal kicking.

If QC had have played like Carter did, there would be calls to bring back corporal punishment, here on the Roar...

Foley's consistency was only ever perception. He played out of his skin for one season with the Waratahs, was unable to match it at Test level last year and has not really matched it since.

That's even better Robbo .- Cooper Giteau with Toomua off bench.
