AFL fines Martin $2000 for gesture

By News / Wire

Dustin Martin’s second controversial on-field gesture in less than two years has meant a $2000 AFL fine for the Richmond star.

The match review panel referred the midfielder to AFL football operations after he gave Magpies fans a two-finger salute during last Saturday’s match.

The AFL also fined him $2000 during the 2013 finals series for crossing his arms in a “jailbird” gesture during a match.

That fine was suspended for two years, meaning it was less than a month from expiring.

“The MRP referred Martin’s case back to the football department for decision, due to the fact the Richmond player had had a suspended $2000 sanction … imposed on him,” the AFL said.

“After contacting the club and receiving a written explanation from the player, it was decided the suspended sanction from 2013 would be imposed for this matter, with no further penalty beyond the $2000 fine.”

Earlier on Thursday, Tigers coach Damien Hardwick said they had spoken to their players about on-field behaviour in the wake of the AFL taking action against Martin.

“We just want to control what we control within the white lines and it’s something we spoke to our group about – we didn’t like it,” he said.

“We like our players to celebrate goals with their teammates (and) we like our players to just worry about what’s happening within the white lines.”

You're right Ads - Jetta gave the WC fans the FU / up yours sign at the conclusion of his dance. The media and AFL overlooked this part of his dance completely yet it didn't ignore Martins two finger salute? The AFL is based on hypocrisy and double standards. It really is a disgrace.

This is SPOT ON!!! Copied this from another site discussing the same topic: Hang on? According to the principles laid out during the Adam Goodes saga by most of the media commentators and AFL stake-holders, it was made pretty clear that actions or words are deemed offensive or inoffensive solely by how they are received by those to whom they are directed. Eg. Adam Goodes took offence at being called an ape by a 13 yo girl, therefore, she transgressed. Ok. We're clear on that. So, now we apply that same principle to the Dustin Martin episode. No doubt, the two-finger salute could be, and probably was, considered offensive by some sections of the crowd/public. Whilst personally I find that a little precious, fair enough. It is an offensive gesture. Therefore, Dustin Martin transgressed. Ok. We're clear on that also. Now let's test that identical principle on the actions of Adam Goodes and Lewis Jetta. Were some sections of the crowd at the two games (Carlton and West Coast respectively) and public watching the games offended by those actions? Clearly, they were. So you have to say that Goodes and Jetta transgressed, do you not? Now for the sanctions placed on Goodes and Jetta by the AFL for their transgressions? Waiting....? Waiting...? I think GM and certain sections of the media need to come out and be honest about this and admit that their flawed teachings actually promote and encourage the following dangerous erroneous principles in society: 1) If the actions of a white person offends a black person, then that white person has transgressed. 2) If the actions of a white person offends another white person, then that white person has transgressed. but... 3) If the actions of a black person offends a white person, then that's ok. The white person just needs to suck it up, get over it and move on. Surely, this is where the problem lies. Be honest and admit it Gillon...

Goodes didnt actually throw the pretend spear, didnt follow through, but Jetta did. More so, he finished it up with a gesture that means exactly the same thing that Martins did. Jettas penalty - support and adoration from everyone for responding to a rowdy crowd. And the swearing, gesturing Collingwood muppets were being a lot more feral than the West Coast boo-ing muppets. Thats balanced.
