Highlights: Masten hurt as Eagles secure home final

By Justin Chadwick / Wire

West Coast will host Hawthorn in an AFL qualifying final on Friday after locking up second spot with a record 95-point win over St Kilda at Domain Stadium.

But the win has come at a big cost, with midfielder Chris Masten set to miss the start of the finals after injuring his right hamstring.

The Eagles entered Saturday night’s match knowing a loss would drop them from second to fourth – a situation that would pit them into a derby final against arch rivals Fremantle.

But that scenario never appeared likely as West Coast unleashed their attacking might to set up the 18.17 (125) to 4.6 (30) win.

It was West Coast’s biggest win over St Kilda, eclipsing the 92-point victory achieved in 2001.

Masten was subbed out eight minutes into the second quarter after injuring his hamstring.

The 26-year-old had only just returned from a two-week suspension for biting, and he appears a long shot to be fit to take on the Hawks in Perth.

Defender Jeremy McGovern made it through the match, but he was troubled at times by his left shoulder that he injured last week.

Eagles midfielder Matt Priddis enhanced his chances of winning back-to-back Brownlow medals with another standout performance.

Priddis tallied 35 disposals and nine clearances, while Andrew Gaff (36 possessions) and Mark LeCras (four goals) were also key contributors.

Ruckman Nic Naitanui battled with Priddis for best-on-ground honours.

Naitanui kicked three goals and took a spectacular pack mark in the final quarter.

Forward Josh Kennedy was held goalless in the first half.

But the former Blue rubber-stamped his name on the Coleman Medal with three goals in the second half, taking his season tally to 75.

Eagles coach Adam Simpson gave his players a clip following last week’s 57-point loss to Adelaide.

The tough love worked a treat as West Coast slammed through four unanswered goals inside the opening 10 minutes to put the Saints on the back foot.
St Kilda managed to keep West Coast goalless for the next 35 minutes.

But the Saints’ inability to score regularly themselves came back to haunt them, with the Eagles piling on the goals in the second half to run away with the easy win.

West Coast are hopeful Will Schofield will be able to return from a hamstring injury next week.

Hawthorn are sweating on the fitness of Isaac Smith, who injured his knee in Saturday’s win over Carlton.

St Kilda, who have posted six wins and a draw this season, are likely to finish the season in 13th spot.

It’s a step in the right direction compared to last year, when the Saints finished last after managing just four victories.

However, their finish to the year was disappointing, with last week’s 97-point loss to Sydney followed up by their meek performance against West Coast.

I heard Simmo in a recent interview state that Masten is in his best 18. That's how important he is. He has had an outstanding season and his disposal efficiency was excellent for most of the season but it dropped away approx 5 weeks ago and I'm hoping that it comes back for finals. He still doesn't convert his running shots at goal. If he can fix that and start kicking 20-30 goals a year he'd be hard to ignore for the AA 40 but he still probably wouldn't make the final AA.

Let's see if you have any tooth marks on your arm if you shove your forearm in someone's mouth? Also, did you see it? No, because the camera view was bloody 300m away!

Yep fair assessment of Masten Dean but I have has seen him choke a little when the pressure is on and also squew kicks I think there are better kicks than him ,Shepperd Shuey and Sheed.

Masten plays on the wing and is an and elite runner and exceptional kick. Kennedy has been quoted as saying that he provides the best delivery into the forward line. Just don't let him shoot for goal. :) Masten is not in the team to get contested possessions even though he averages over 8 per game, which is higher than Gaff as is his disposal efficiency. He always provides an option because he is nearly impossible to run with.

Masten is not best 22, gets the ball a lot does nothing with it, good for dream team and thats about it. He wouldn't break into most other top sides midfields. Disagree with Lroy on Priddis, fantastic player, one of the few I would want from WC

I don't rate Clarke at all btw Love Griffin! We are just passionate supporters as are you Jax. You love to take the moral high ground and claim that all the Dockers supporters are feral and you can't have a conversation with any of them and blah blah blah. But your own sides supporters aren't any better. Anyway nothing wrong with a bit of banter! This site would be very boring if everyone agreed on everything!

Yeah gotta say Masten has definitely improved this year as has everyone else ,but I gotta say when the pressure is up he can crack sometimes but I believe Simmo sees him as a good link man and seems to love him. scooter while a sentimental favourite has struggled a bit of late whether it's his ankle of just form ,Simmo has to play the best team and at the moment he's not good enough ,as far as priddis goes what can you say about a guy that gives his all ,yes it may be that he goes off the boil from time to time the problem is because he is so consistent people expect maybe too much of him .I thought his game went to a new level last year and he won a Brownlow I beleive his game has gone up a level again this year his poise in ball delivery is invalubable but as with any side up against a good side the better players will come under more attention ,it's up to his teammates to help him out A pretty tough call of yours Leroy considering where we have finished this year with the injuries we've have

C'mon Lroy, I thought that you had moved on from this? WC is much stronger with Masto playing. His elite running allows him be the outside link up man and his role is crucial to the game plan. Scooter was a great player in 2012 but he has had a dodgy ankle for two years which is why he was omitted last week and why Simmo is reluctant to play him. He's had a few chances lately and he hasn't exactly set the world on fire. Rosa was a very good player, like Scooter he just needs to string games together and you will see his worth. Don't start me on Pridda. He plays against quality opposition every week and he's had a better year than last year. 85% of the WC team were missing last week so I'm not sure why your singling out one of our most important players for one bad TEAM game? Last year you said Priddis was a hack that should be traded. A few months ago you seemed to be back in love with him and today your questioning his value again? Stop riding the roller coaster.

Masten? front runner, Eagles are stronger without him... he goes to water when the blow torch is applied.... Scooter Selwood will put his body on the line, chase, smother, tackle, do all the hard stuff that Masten finds so distasteful.. were going to need a Daniel Chick type character in the side if we want to win the flag, maybe Scooter is our man. Lets see how Pridddis goes against quality opposition, he has a habit of disappearing against gun players, , didnt even realize he was playing in the Freo game... Dangerfield gave him a bath in Adelaide. Rosa needs to prove that they made a mistake back in 2006 by dropping him prior to the finals. As far as Im concerned the reason we won our last flag was because he wasnt in the team. Still a few questions marks over the Eagles, Its all to play for, flags, reputations everything this Friday night.

Yep, the knuckle draggers are out in force this morning. The funny thing is that I have friends that play footy for Freo and my brother is a mad Dockers supporter that could have being drafted if he was more disciplined and wanted a place on an AFL list and they talk very differently about WC and Freo to the fans on this forum. They have very different opinions on practically every topic, For example, my brother was a ruckman and he doesn't rate Clarke or Griffo at all but Freo fans on here seem to love them both and they can't stop telling us all how great they are, even after Clarke was dropped for consistently poor performances. These people are, for the most part one-eyed Dockers fans and it's impossible to have any type of reasonable conversation with them. Freo is perfect in their eyes and everyone else, especially WC is crap and they will use every opportunity available to them to have a snipe at WC. Once you accept that most things they say are rubbish everything else falls into place. Yesterday I found a Freo fan sniping at WC on a cricket tab of all places - they just cant help themselves it seems.

Did Masten bite his own hamstring? Bit of karma I think after getting such a soft penalty.
