Australia v Great Britain Day 3: Davis Cup live scores, blog

By Shane Jones / Roar Guru

Match Result: Great Britain is into the final for the first time since 1978 after Andy Murray defeated Bernard Tomic in straight sets to defeat Australia

The Brit, who made just 8 unforced errors in the match, was too strong for Tomic.

The Aussie gave it everything in the first two sets, but it wasn’t enough, as Murray won 7-5 6-3 6-2.

Britain will face either Belgium or Argentina in the final.

If Argentina win the Brits will host the final later in the year.

The loss for Australia also ends the career in Davis Cup for Lleyton Hewitt.

He ends his career with 58 wins and 20 losses over his 17 year career for the green and gold.

The tie ended 3-2 to the British, with Thanasi Kokkinakis winning the final rubber 7-5 6-4 against Daniel Evans.

Match Preview: Andy Murray has a chance to send Great Britain through to the Davis Cup final for the first time since 1978 when he battles Australia on the final day of competition. Join The Roar for a live blog of the final day of action from 10:00pm AEST.

After winning an epic doubles match with his brother Jamie yesterday, Andy now needs to find the energy for one more win and an historic win for Great Britain.

Both teams were gallant but the Aussies fell short after a four hour doubles battle in Glasgow.

Now Australia’s hopes potentially rest on Bernard Tomic as he is lined up to face Murray today. He has fitness battles of his own after starting to cramp against Dan Evans on Day 1.

It will be interesting to see what Wally Masur does. Does he play Tomic? Or does he play Hewitt or Groth like he did in Darwin against Kazakhstan?

It would be a huge risk to play Hewitt or Groth after the marathon match they played yesterday.

More than likely, Australia’s and Masur’s hopes will be on the Aussie who was banished from the team in July for the quarter final.

The Roar will be live blogging until the contest is decided. The fifth rubber, if Great Britain win the fourth, will not be blogged.

Andy Murray v Bernard Tomic
This match will all be about the fitness levels of both players. Can Tomic save enough of it over 30 hours to defeat Murray who played a four hour match yesterday?

If he can, and drags the match to four or five sets, the rubber suddenly becomes interesting.

These two have faced before with Murray winning easily in 2012 and 2013 in Brisbane and Miami respectively. I expect today to be closer with Tomic an improved player over the last three years.

Is that enough to defeat Murray though? I don’t think so. It is going to take a lot, and a little bit of fatigue from Murray, to get the job done.

Murray is a short favourite and should defeat Tomic. If Tomic is any chance he needs to serve extremely well and win 60 per cent of points on Murray’s second serve.

Prediction: Murray 3-1

Dan Evans v Thanasi Kokkinakis
If this match becomes a live rubber, Australia become a huge favourite to progress. Evans is ranked 300 in the world, and is suffering a calf injury after a four set loss to Tomic.

In comparison, Kokkinakis is fresh and inside the top 100, after his loss to Murray. Evans will give everything he has, like he did against Tomic, but it won’t be enough against Kokkinakis.

He may suffer from nerves at times but the Aussie has enough class to defeat Evans if it gets to the last rubber.

Prediction: Kokkinakis 3-1

This is where I leave the coverage. If a 5th rubber is played, the result will be in the report at the top. Until next year, where Australia start the journey again, it is bye for now.

It also ends the Davis Cup career of Lleyton Hewit. Thanks Lley Lley for the memories. He is, without doubt, Australia's best ever player to put on the green and gold.

Hail to Murray, the one man army. If we had to play three men in singles rather than two, us Poms would never win anything.

That doubles was the difference. It was still a gallant effort for Australia this year. Not many expected them to win against the Czech Republic in February. To make the semi-final, with the experience in the squad, is brilliant. This team is on the right track.

Tomic has a game point but can't hit a winner down the line. Deuce again as this game goes for almost 5 minutes.
