Nathan Friend's backflip try assist voted NRL's 'headline moment' of 2015

By The Roar / Editor

Scandals off the field have dominated headlines in 2015, but Nathan Friend’s remarkable try assist in Round 18 was a welcome distraction and provided a viral moment to savour.

Friend’s jump and backflip offload against the Melbourne Storm received the top gong at the Dally M Awards under the Peter Frilingos Headline Moment category.

Friend’s backflip, tunnelball pass was one of those moments where the game surprises and you witness something new.

To cap off the move Tuimoala Lolohea then scored a try in the corner with minimal space to work in. The winger’s try in the corner, once considered freakish is now commonplace in the NRL.

Perhaps Friend’s backflip will become a standard offload in a few years?

Only highlight for what was a dreadful year from Brian McFadden's useless bunch. Oh a few pieces of Shaun Johnson solo magic must not be forgotten, particularly that amazing final 10 minutes at Shark Park. It will take more than RTS & Bully to help this sleeping giant off the couch. McFadden offers zero as a coach. Sacks wingers after most loses - Kata who missed a 1,000 tackles week in week out avoided the lofty swing of the axe. No game plan, no idea. The signings of Jono Wright, Matt Allwood, Blake Ayshford among others is puzzling at the very least. And to release Sua Matagi, inexcusable. Until they replace the coach they will continue to frustrate both their fans and the general public & continue to be a footy tipsters nightmare. On a positive note well done Nathan Friend. A remarkable little guy with bucket loads of courage & a great memory for decades to come.

Without a doubt, one of the freakiest things ever seen on a football ground. As Andrew Voss called it "Oh what happened there?"
