Giants vs 49ers highlights: Jarryd Hayne makes 25 yards in three plays

What a thriller! A much better game than many were expecting as this one went right down to the final minutes and was a great effort by both sides.

A heartbreaking loss for the 49ers, especially given how hard they worked at the end to come back – this is really one of those games that the Giants won rather than the 49ers lost.

Kaepernick bounced back from his bad stretch of games to complete 23 of 35 for 262 yards and two touchdowns.

Carlos Hyde tried his best to ignite the offense, carrying the ball 21 times for 93 yards and a touchdown, but it wasn’t enough.

Anquan Boldin caught eight passes for 107 yards and a touchdown.

Jarryd Hayne saw the field in a limited outing, running the ball twice for nine yards and returning a punt 16 yards.

The 49ers defence was good at times, especially when they picked off Eli to end the first half, but they just gave up too many points late in the game and the Giants took advantage.

Eli played out of his mind, and put in one of his best games in recent memory, completing 41 of 54 passes for 441 yards, three touchdowns and an interception.

With passing numbers like that, it’s no surprise to see some of the Giants’ receiving numbers so impressive. Odell Beckham Jr. caught seven passes for 121 yards and a touchdown, Shane Vereen caught eight passes for 86 yards and Dwayne Harris had six receptions for 72 yards; Larry Donnell caught the third touchdown.

A great game from both teams, with both offensive and defensive teams playing well, and a lot of fight and determination on all sides.

It’s the Giants who triumph at home to give the 49ers their fourth straight loss.

After opening the season with two losses, the Giants have bounced back in recent weeks and have strung together consecutive wins going into their Week 5 clash with the 49ers. It appears they’ve finally learnt how to close out games, and had convincing wins over the Washington Redskins at home in Week 3 and against the Buffalo Bills on the road last week.

Eli Manning has had a good year so far, following on from his bounce back campaign last season. Through four weeks of action, the quarterback has thrown for 976 yards, seven touchdowns and only one interception, completing 63 per cent of his passes. He’ll need to keep making good decisions with the football if the Giants are to continue winning games going forward.

Rashad Jennings and Andre Williams have split the carries, but neither are playing even remotely well. Jennings has 42 carries for 134 yards and a touchdown, while Williams has 37 carries for 121 yards and a touchdown. They are averaging 3.3 and 3.2 yards per carry respectively. The running game needs to come alive – a committee approach isn’t working.

The second year sensation of Odell Beckham Jr has caught 24 passes for 307 yards and two touchdowns. Fellow wide receiver Rueben Randle has 14 catches for 175 yards and two scores and tight end Larry Donnell has 15 receptions, 119 yards and a touchdown.

For the Giants, they have 10 players on the injury report. Linebacker Devon Kennard (hamstring), wide receiver Victor Cruz (calf) and defensive ends Robert Ayers (hamstring) and George Selvie (calf) are all out.

Cornerbacks Jayron Hosley (concussion) and Trumaine McBride (groin) are questionable to play, and both had limited participation in practice. Linebacker Jonathan Casillas (calf) is also questionable, and did not participate in practice. Tackle Ereck Flowers (ankle), defensive tackle Markus (knee) and tight end Jerome Cunningham (knee) are all probable to play.

After winning their first game against the Minnesota Vikings, the San Francisco 49ers have been in free fall ever since, losing their Week 2 game by 25 points and their Week 3 game by 40 points. They’ve scored a total of 10 points over their past two games.

Colin Kaepernick has certainly regressed as a passer this season, and his poor play is a direct factor on why the 49ers are now 1-3. He’s thrown for 727 yards, completing 62 per cent of his passes, but his two touchdowns look even worse next to his five interceptions.

His inability to lead his team to scoring situations, combined with his penchant for throwing to the other team and holding onto the football for too long – he’s taken 14 sacks – will always spell disaster. He needs to stop relying on his feet and start making plays from the pocket.

Speaking of making plays with your feet, Kaepernick is currently the team’s second leading rusher; he has 33 carries for 195 yards and a touchdown. The over-reliance on the run by the quarterback is a clear indicator of his lack of confidence and self-esteem in his own passing abilities.

Carlos Hyde has been getting it done, notching 62 carries for 282 yards and two touchdowns. Jarryd Hayne has been virtually nonexistent, carrying the ball six times for a mere 16 yards. He’s had six punt returns for 56 yards, and that number would be much lower if it weren’t for the huge 37-yard return he had in last week’s game. He’s fumbled the ball twice.

The 49ers have eight players on the injury report. Linebackers NaVorro Bowman and Ahmad Brooks are both listed on the report under the ‘not injury related’ category, with Bowman being probable to play and Brooks being doubtful, not participating in practice.

Tight end Vernon Davis (knee) is out, while wide receiver Quinton Patton (concussion) and tackle Joe Staley (knee) are questionable. Guard Alex Boone (shoulder), safety LJ McCray (knee) and tight end Vance McDonald (chest) all are probable to play.

San Francisco will suffer their fourth straight loss, and their season really has a chance of derailing. The Giants put up 24 points on the Bills last week, but they’ll score even more against San Francisco – I predict a score of 34-10. Eli and OBJ will link up to the tune of 150 yards and three touchdowns, while Carlos Hyde will score San Francisco’s lone touchdown.
