As an Australian, how do you write a balanced piece from the perspective of bitter disappointment? I guess you try and take the view that you enjoyed the spectacle of the best Rugby World Cup final that’s been played.

Twickenham was filled with ardent rugby lovers. Knowing how our game competes for a support base at home, it was grand to see our team centre stage in a packed stadium. Our Wallabies would have enjoyed that.

The best two teams of young men, currently playing in the world, featured in the match. These same young men played ferociously, in good spirit, with fortitude and skills that few of us could ever match.

An experienced and absolutely, comprehensively skilled New Zealand team played a developing Australian side the like of which we haven’t seen for a decade.

Five wonderful tries were scored in some very entertaining and often tense passages of play.

The match was historic on many levels. New Zealand and Australia had never met before in a Rugby World Cup final. The All Blacks won a third World Cup. We watched some of the greats playing for the last time.

Yes, there were some questionable refereeing decisions.

Yes, there was some questionable play by players from both sides.

No, my team didn’t win.

But at the end of it, we spectators – fans, believers, followers, call us what you will – could thrill at the spectacle.

The players will live another day. So will we. I am looking forward to what these Wallabies can do next season.
