Melbourne Cup Sweeps mayhem as the newspapers get it wrong

By The Roar / Editor

If there’s something you don’t want, it’s mistakes on Melbourne Cup day. And unfortunately, there’s plenty by both Fairfax and News, with the all important Sweepstakes printed wrong and online versions having various problems.

Fairfax’s problem this morning saw Max Presnell’s Sydney Morning Herald Melbourne Cup Sweep guide, printed with a range of issues.

Criterion and Grand Marshal were put in twice, while poor Sky Hunter and Kingfisher were left out. Preferment has the wrong number, The Offer is in 12 instead of the 13, and poor Max is tarred with an unkind brush.

The online version is now right, but it’ll be all too late for some.

The Sydney Morning Herald’s editor-in-chief Darren Goodsir has apologised to readers and said “bums have been kicked”.

Not to be outdone, News Corp’s initial online sweepstake was from 2014, an easy mistake to make and again, corrected in due course.

Who can you trust? We’d say trust Auntie, with the ABC putting together a nice sweepstakes.
