Michelle Payne deserves all the recognition and accolades she is currently receiving after becoming the first woman to win the Melbourne Cup, on Prince Of Penzance.

In a time-honoured sport which has been dominated by men, for Payne to even gain a ride in the race was a creditable effort.

It has been reported that some of the horse’s owners were keen to relieve her of her duties, so for trainer Darren Weir and a couple of the owners to back Payne and stand their ground showed how much belief and confidence they had in the young hoop, which was vindicated by her superb ride.

Payne’s outburst in her victory speech was obviously the result of years of pent-up frustration at a lack of opportunities, and gave us a small insight into the harsh realities of a female trying to make a successful career as a jockey.

Hopefully Payne’s breakthrough victory clears a path for other female jockeys to achieve major success, but only time will tell.

No matter what, Michelle Payne’s superb, tactical and patient ride on Prince Of Penzance after he began tardily has seen her name etched in the history books.

It also proved that female jockeys can be up there with the world’s best.
