The New York Knicks fanbase booed Kristaps Porzingis when he was selected as their fourth overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. Yet early in the season, alongside Carmelo Anthony, he has led the way for the rebuilding franchise.
Carmelo has been perhaps the most complete offensive weapon in the NBA through past years with a career average of over 25 points per game, and he has spoken in delight of Porzingis’s recent spectacular performances.
Porzingis will only enter his 10th game on Saturday morning.
Touted as the prospect with the most upside from the whole draft class, his 7’3″ frame and smooth shooting stroke could see him become the best European in the league since Dirk Nowitzki.
Through nine games this season the rookie has managed four double-doubles and 11.9 points per game, also pulling down nine boards.
As a Knicks fan who was sceptical about his selection I’m impressed by what I’ve seen so far. His outside shooting stroke has been shown by a clutch buzzer beater to beat the Hornets, which was overturned and discounted from the score.
Porzingis has also shown off spectacular ability to drive the lane and his athletic ability has been showcased in spades with vicious put-back dunks and rugged defence, all despite his slim frame.
The 20-year-old has said he wants to emulate Russell Westbrook’s aggression when he attacks the rim. His star is on the rise and although it might be too early to call I’m confident.
Let’s hope his progression continues.
