Live-wire Latvian: Kristaps Porzingis

By Hamish Hutton / Roar Rookie

The New York Knicks fanbase booed Kristaps Porzingis when he was selected as their fourth overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. Yet early in the season, alongside Carmelo Anthony, he has led the way for the rebuilding franchise.

Carmelo has been perhaps the most complete offensive weapon in the NBA through past years with a career average of over 25 points per game, and he has spoken in delight of Porzingis’s recent spectacular performances.

Porzingis will only enter his 10th game on Saturday morning.

Touted as the prospect with the most upside from the whole draft class, his 7’3″ frame and smooth shooting stroke could see him become the best European in the league since Dirk Nowitzki.

Through nine games this season the rookie has managed four double-doubles and 11.9 points per game, also pulling down nine boards.

As a Knicks fan who was sceptical about his selection I’m impressed by what I’ve seen so far. His outside shooting stroke has been shown by a clutch buzzer beater to beat the Hornets, which was overturned and discounted from the score.

Porzingis has also shown off spectacular ability to drive the lane and his athletic ability has been showcased in spades with vicious put-back dunks and rugged defence, all despite his slim frame.

The 20-year-old has said he wants to emulate Russell Westbrook’s aggression when he attacks the rim. His star is on the rise and although it might be too early to call I’m confident.

Let’s hope his progression continues.

Relatively unknown, skinny 7fters from Europe hardly have a great track record in the NBA. And taking the Zinger meant not taking more 'known' guys like Mudiay or Winslow, so I get that Knicks fans were nervous. Interesting to re-do that draft today. Lakers would probably consider taking Porzingis with the 2nd pick!

As did i, while watching the draft admittedly i was hoping that there would be something crazy and Jahil Okafor would slip down, but Kristaps definitely justified his high selection now

I was wondering why Knicks fans were so unhappy with the pick. Chatting with a mate at the time we could only really see upside for Porzingis and it's good to see him coming through. The guy has a complete set of skills on a 7'3" frame, you really can't go wrong. The only worry would be injury as his body has not fully filled out yet. A bit more strength and this dude will be a monster.

Agreed for a team with a substantial financial base they have failed to bring home success for along time. Perhaps rebuilding through the draft like smaller franchises is the way to go, they have already proven that they are better than what everyone thought Cheers for leaving a comment, love to hear others thoughts

It's good for basketball that the Knicks fans have some hope and optimism finally. Over the summer there was some thinking New York might have the two worst teams in the league. Porzingas definitely isn't the standard euro stiff. I imagine when he fills out a bit he's going to be quite the handful
