A complete mock AFL draft, from pick 1 to 112

By Tom Baulch / Roar Guru

We have all been waiting for this – a whole mock draft, from pick 1 to 112.

The academy players have proven to be a bit of a task, so for every time a club bids on an academy player or on a father-son player, I haven’t dropped down their number in the draft. This just keeps it simple – your club keeps their original picks instead.

This is a fairly complicated thing for new comers to understand so here’s an example to help clarify:

If Melbourne have pick three and they bid on Callum Mills, who is a Sydney academy player, then Sydney have the choice to match that bid, or they can accept. Matching means that they get the player; accepting means that the bidder, in this case Melbourne, get Mills.

So pick 3 in this new points system is 2234 points, but a 20 per cent discount is on offer for academy and father-son players, so 1787 points. Sydney must match that by equalling those points, and in doing this they will give up picks 33, 36, 37, 54 and 72 which equal exactly 1787 points.

In most cases it will work to an exact value, but if it doesn’t then the amount of points left over will slot into its place in the draft.

(It’s hard to explain but will come together on draft night and will be a little easier to understand.)

This mock has been done specifically to suit each club’s needs – it’s not done randomly.

Have a read and enjoy! You can see the bottom to find who your club picked up.

No teams should go into the draft next year with any deficits.

Are you happy with your club’s pick-ups? If not, who else would you have?

Well done Tom. You got enough speculative picks right (eg Mitch Brown) and others close to the mark that you can go home happy from draft night. From the Bombers perspective, I reckon getting Brown is a better bet than Weideman who could have injury problems and Daniher needs some experience around him. Alex Morgan is the interesting one, obviously you didn't rate him highly and he seems a bit high at 29 so apart from pace, what do you reckon he might have to offer? And, will they regret passing up other guys (eg Rhys Mathieson, Ryan Clarke, Mitchell Hibberd, Harley Balic) to get him?

Thanks Graeme, much appreciated. Believe it or not I am a bombers supporter as well and I feel like I know what the bombers want and what they need so I can't wait to see who they pick up - I think that Weideman (big key forward) and Curnow (191cm midfielder who can also play as a third tall forward) are almost definite pick up with picks 4 and 5. Daniel Rioli (small forward) is exactly what we need since Colyer has become a winger now which leaves a void needing to be filled with a small forward. Pick 25 will be interesting, don't know what will happen there but expect a midfielder like Ryan Clarke. Pick 57 coud be Mitch Brown as a mature age recruit, would fit in nicely to the back 6, hopefully leaving out Steinberg or Pears who were pretty woeful I thought this year for the Bombers. Pick 80 would likely be a father son pick up which could be Daniher or Tom Wallis - Dean's son, both being smaller outside midfielders. Thanks again Graeme.

This is fantastic Tom, great work. Your knowledge of the draft talent is extraordinary. Ive really enjoyed browsing through this. Ill look forward to seeing how many of your Bombers predicted picks turn out to be close to the mark. Thanks for the time that you put into this. Cheers.

hisham could be picked up his RANGE is about 60-100 - Small forward/midfielder who is very smart around goals using his speed and long kicking to advantage. A good mark for his size, he represented Vic Metro in the NAB AFL U18 Championships and had an excellent year for the Cannons. James Parsons has about a 75% chance of being picked up, his RANGE would be about 50-100 - NAB AFL Academy member who has elite speed and his long kicking is a feature of his game. His performance against Vic Country in game one was the highlight of his five matches at the NAB AFL U18 Championships. Thomas Glenn - wont be picked up. That's Final.

Cheers Matt, always good to have some positive feedback. Himmellberg is and will be a terrific player I think, but will be in the region of pick 30-60, he was predicted to go later before the Grand Final match which definately boosted his draft stocks and has put him in contention for top 30, will be awesome to see where he goes but I think he still has a lot of development left in him. Is in the GWS academy and with GWS already not having many picks left because of there 2 really promising academy players Hopper and Kennedy, GWS have kind of left Himmellberg out. Will be interested to see where he ends up, but I presume that GWS will get him and could go into a deficit next year just to secure him...

Great Read Tom. Very well researched. I'm interested in seeing where Himmelberg goes given that I don't think GWS have interest in him, have heard reports he could have been top 30? I think he could be that link up half forward that seems to be in vogue like a Stringer or what Jesse White and Lynch were supposed to be for Collingwood. I know he was BOG in the Allies game on Grand Final day, so that might boost his draft stocks a little.

Matty Jeffs - But in a Mock draft trying to predict who goes at pick 80 is close to impossible - if that is you biggest complaint Tom has done a pretty good job.

Cheers Nick, was a little hard to get all of the academy things around my head but I think I get it all know. Thanks very much for your input much appreciated - I was thinking of making an updated version of this with all having corrections but with the draft in 4 days I don't think that I'd have the time. Cheers again.

Don't want to sound critical but you need to start knowing your draftees - Galloway - 206cm, expect to see him picked up. Jimmy Miller - I played with him this year in school footy - key forward, took 23 marks one game, Freo want him badly as he has gone a little under the radar this year. Parella - BIG BLOKE, 204cm I think, any club looking for a ruckman would take him. Flynn - Developing ruckman 200cm who competes aggressively and is athletic. Agile and courageous, he can push forward and be dangerous as a marking forward. Excellent below the knees for a player of his size and shows potential with his rucking craft at stoppages. Performed well at the NAB AFL U18 Championships. MacPherson - Small midfielder/forward who is a prolific ball winner averaging 21 disposals in eight matches with the Knights this year. Missed the NAB AFL U18 championships because of injury. Eligible for father/son to the Western Bulldogs where his father Steve played and progressed to play three VFL matches with Footscray this year. Lovett - Gained national exposure by taking one of the marks of the year in the TAC Cup. The Dandenong Stingrays inside midfielder had some injury struggles this season, but averaged 17 touches and three marks over 14 matches. Sullivan - Big forward with big hands and can play in the ruck as well. Terrific prospect - needs time. Stewart - small player, could play as a forward or a mid, but knows how to find the footy. MacAdam - indigenous boy who boasts skill and athleticism, WC love the look of him and will pick him up, might go in the rookie draft if he doesnt go in the national draft.

That's all any old bugger wants to hear. I also am keen to see who the WA clubs pick up...particularly the Purple People. Look forward to more stuff from you. Maybe something on pleasant surprises in the draft.

Well Essendon want Daniher and have been talking to him, Wallis is small and not very bulked up and plays at an outside mid which is nothing like his dad and essendon don't need Wallis.

Hey Baz. Both of those speculations seem to be pretty accurate, there was an article written about him the other day in the West Australian wondering if he would still go to West Coast, but following a disappointing year for the dragons after quitting school in January so he could solely focus just on his footy. A bad season and we will see if that has any effects on his draft chances. But at this moment he has not nominated WC for some reason? Maybe has been talked to be some AFL clubs so he looks to keep his options open.

Yes, I agree with you there, just thought that Carlton would be going with a defender with one of their 4 picks in the top 20, so if Keiran Collins is still there at pick 19 - don't be surprised to see him going to the blues. Thanks as well Jack, it took me a while so very happy to receive some positive feedback.

Hey matty, I know that people would be unhappy with a few choices, and that's good - it creates discussion and that's what a mock draft is all about, a bit of discussion and disagreement. and just for the record I have Gach Nyoun going to Hawthorn at pick 48.

Hi Cam, just like to start off by saying that you need to take at least 3 players in the draft, so they can't just take 2.

I imagine Tom would want to be read on his merits but for those who don't know, the author has just finished Year 10. I agree Gary. This is a remarkable piece of research and and a very mature turn of phrase. Even when corrected on a few finer details of the bidding process, ( which totally escapes me) Tom acknowledges the correction, appreciates it and responds respectfully. You'll go a long way, Mr Baulch.
