Floyd Mayweather and Ronda Rousey have taken verbal shots at each other for the past year or so now. Sometimes it has seemed serious and other times more of publicity stunt.

With Rousey’s recent and surprising KO loss to Holly Holm, the now retired Mayweather has offered to help the former champion with her stand up game.

It is common knowledge that Ronda is more than capable on the ground, with her judoka skills she is able to efficiently ground opponents and force them into submissions with a variety of finishing moves.

Her stand up game, however, is still pretty solid but looked suspect against a former world champion boxer. Ronda is notoriously confident in her own ability but Mayweather said, “I think that she needs some time off to regroup and refocus”.

Which would be wise, but the UFC are trying to rush their prized female fighter back into the octagon. Mayweather is right when he says that she needs to rest, her confidence would be dented but she can retain it with a lengthy and proper fight preparation.

“Let Holly fight, defend the title a few times, and build it,” Mayweather said. He believes Rousey should go out there and do her usual thing, beating all close contenders before rekindling her rivalry with Holm. It would become ‘the fight’, just like Mayweather’s bout with Manny Pacquiao.

Mayweather believes that he and Rousey can overcome their own bickering for him to mentor her with the stand up game, and he said he never thought it to be personal and apologised for the initial comment that started the feud.

The comment was harmless in a way – where Mayweather claimed to have never heard of Rousey – but hurtful to someone with a large ego such as Rousey. His explanation for not knowing her was that he was too busy trying to perfect his own art.

Fair enough, he definitely knows who she is now. I wonder if they’ll strike up a friendship.
