Former NBA star turned coach Kevin McHale has been fired by the Houston Rockets, after only 11 games this season.

After losing four straight games, the organisation decided to pull the pin on his three-year, $16.8 million contract.

McHale had a record of 193-130 for .568per cent, much better than some of the other head coaches around the league. Last season he led the Rockets to the Western Conference Finals, and led them to the playoffs both seasons before that.

Rockets general manager Daryl Morey announced that the son of Bernie Bickerstaff, a long-time NBA coach, JB Bickerstaff will lead the Rockets for the rest of the season.

Houston currently sit 11th in the Western Conference at 4-7, but an array of former NBA stars have said that this is because of individual players more than McHale.

Magic Johnson tweeted “if it’s true the Houston Rockets fired Coach McHale they made a big mistake”.

He then followed that up with “the rockets have great individual players, not great team players”.

Both tweets were retweeted thousands of times.

McHale was a three-time NBA champion and seven-time All-Star with a storied Celtics team that included Robert Parish and Larry Bird.

He will be looking to fit in at another franchise – with the right players he could deliver substantial success.
