Geoff Ogilvy could have – and should have – fired in a 63 or 64 in the second round of the Australian Open yesterday.

But Ogilvy’s cold putter destroyed his superb strokeplay that carded a three-putt bogey at the eighth, a birdie at the 16th, and at least seven or eight genuine birdie chances among the 16 pars.

Normally a very reliable putter, the 2006 US Open and 2010 Australian Open champion should be a clear leader at the halfway stage, but the stats tell the story.

In his first round 71, Ogilvy had the best putting stats with 23. Yesterday, even though he hit 78 per cent of greens in regulation, he needed 31 putts.

So Ogilvy will start four shots off Matthew Jones’ pace who deserves to lead, needing only 25 and 24 putts for his two rounds.

Lurking at three-under with Ogilvy is world number one and defending champion Jordan Spieth.

He carded a 68 yesterday which also should have been better, admonishing himself three times for wrong iron selections. But he did look more like himself over the 18 holes with five birdies even though he had back-to-back bogeys at 15 and 16.

The extraordinary round came from Kiwi Daniel Pearce, ranked 753 in the world.

He started sensationally on the back nine with birdies at 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14, dropped one at 16, and birdied 18 before carding three bogeys on his homeward nine for a 69.

The biggest disappointment was Adam Scott with a battling 72 to just make the cut by two shots.

“I was very flat today and struggled on the greens,” was how Scott described his decidedly odd round of two bogeys and 16 pars.

Special mention of Todd Sinnott, ranked 1093 in the world, who is still in contention alone in second place with 68 and 70. He’s been very consistent with six birdies and just two bogeys with 28 pars.

Even more impressive were his 83 per cent greens in regulation yesterday.
