Chris McQueen is believed to be close to signing with Gold Coast, a move that will pave the way for Sam Burgess’ South Sydney contract to be ratified by the NRL.

It’s understood the Queensland back-rower is close to signing off on a deal with the Titans with an announcement expected soon.

McQueen had been told by Rabbitohs management he was free to look elsewhere and had been heavily linked with a move to the Gold Coast.

“The club has been in positive talks and we’re hoping for a good outcome,” Titans chief executive Graham Annesley said.

Since debuting for the Rabbitohs in 2009, McQueen has made 117 NRL appearances, including the club’s drought-breaking grand final win in 2014. He has also played six State of Origin matches for the Maroons in 2013-14.

The NRL last month refused to register Burgess’ contract with Souths because the club was over the salary cap, even with the departure of centre Dylan Walker.

However, McQueen’s exit will allow the Redfern club to receive the green light to formally sign the dual international.
