TWO GOOD! Zahra wins back-to-back Melbourne Cups on Without a Fight as three horses pull up lame
Without a Fight completed the rare Caulfield Cup-Melbourne Cup double on Tuesday as star jockey Mark Zahra went back-to-back in the big one after…
This Saturday night at Wentworth Park will feature my favourite, must-see sporting event of the year. Not the Christmas Gift, but the Jack Russell Terrier exhibition races!
It’s hard to believe that this event hasn’t featured on any of the sporting bucket lists of writers for The Roar (yet!), because if you haven’t seen Jack Russell Terrier racing, then you simply haven’t lived.
Now, I don’t have much time for the little, yappie, high-maintenance dogs myself, the only advantage of them over a greyhound is that they take up less area should they choose to sit on the couch. But there’s something particularly entertaining about watching the blighters move their little legs as fast as they can, despite not being blessed with the natural attributes to run fast.
Like watching Matt Dunning take an intercept and go as fast as his legs can carry him, Jack Russell Terrier racing is a great spectacle.

Of course, there’s no betting on the Jack Russells (can you imagine if someone tried to rig a Jack Russell Terrier race?) so there are some decent greyhounds on show as well, including the feature, the Christmas Gift.
There was upset after upset last week in the heats of the Christmas Gift, leaving a handy field of greyhounds that could fairly be considered as underrated. The race to the first turn will be keen, with La Grande Logie, Knight Sprite and Leeroy Roller all good beginners with speed to burn.
I fancy Leeroy Roller might win the run to the first turn, and be too hard to run down from there. Knight Sprite is awkwardly drawn, although the slow beginner Are Jip on his inside won’t hurt, but whoever of those two can find the lead will be the winner.
Are Jip ran a good race in the heats and, although he’ll get back in the race, he’ll likely slip into a place.
In the preceding race, there is a great contest between the recent Vic Peters quinella Zambora Brockie and Black Bear Lee. However, the fantastic Bessy Boo, having his 104th career start, may well upset the two. Have something on Bessy and a quinella with Black Bear Lee.
But really, it’s all about the Jack Russells!
