New Zealand Rugby is telling Japan’s new Super Rugby franchise to hurry up and appoint a coach as speculation mounts the role will go to a high-profile Kiwi.
Reports have indicated that Japan-based former Wallabies coach Robbie Deans has been sounded out to coach the Sunwolves for their inaugural campaign.
Former Hurricanes head coach Mark Hammett has also been linked with the job while Fiji’s New Zealand coach John McKee has reportedly turned down an approach.
NZ Rugby chief executive Steve Tew says it is important the role is filled quickly for the credibility of both the Sunwolves and the expanded 18-team competition.
“The biggest worry is that they are yet to appoint a coach. That’s the most pressing problem and we’re told that that will be resolved before Christmas,” Tew said.
“Clearly that’s already too late.”
When the Sunwolves were awarded the franchise, then-Japanese coach Eddie Jones was to be the director of rugby. However, the Australian left his position to become Stormers and then England head coach.
Negative publicity has also surrounded South Africa’s sixth team, the Southern Kings, while Argentina’s inaugural entry, Los Jaguares, have reportedly met all deadlines and are expected to mount a strong first-up campaign.
Tew says there are some positive signs emerging out of Japan, including an improved player roster, a strong commercial programme and sound venue.
“Until we see the competition in play, we won’t be sure.
“The Japanese are working very hard to get up to speed and my South African colleagues continue to assure me that the Kings will be fine.”

Cubelli wanted to play abroad but wants to play for The Pumas also, now there is room for a young player calle Ezcurra to start playing minutes in SR. Otherwise Ezcurra would have been taken by a French team. Pumas could not take the risk of having only two scrum halfs in case of an injury, so develop a new one.

The argies have two good halfbacks, obviously only one can start.

Why is it that when a NZ super rugby coach wins a title, then moves onto a bigger stage, the general public opinion is it's, "a big call to give Joseph the gig at international level – he’s only had one good year at super level after a number of poor ones so lets see him back up." But when an Australian super rugby coach wins on title then he's touted as the next best thing and then rushed into the national job? When Dave Rennie won two super rugby titles, back to back, (after multiple U20's RWC wins I might add) we've barely heard any adulation. After both Ewen Mckenzie and Michael Chieka won a singular title the media immediately put them up on pedestals.

Mark Hammett is tipped to be the Sunwolves coach and Jamie Joseph has been tipped to be the Japan national coach. Take your petty uninformed sniping and stick it up your backside.

Not initially they didn't - they went backwards.

CUW - BS, tech is way different to the way you market people. where there are technological advancements the equivalent for people is learning and being better. people don't become a final product over night. this is isn't going to be a great team over night. people don't work like tech. whatever you do don't become a marketer. u don't know the difference between a person and an iphone. if u don't believe don't be part of it and turn off the telly. its rugby, a simple game. SANZAR should've appointed u as marketer as you would've kept it to a smaller format and been happy to not think outside the square and never venture outside your front gate. yeah that's a real cool courageous way of approaching life. whilst I don't agree with everything SANZAR have done, as most of the time they don't have a clue and just do the same sh!t over and over again but this is different and gutsy. this is different finally and better than just giving aus another 2 teams or SA another 3 teams, that I'm sick of. this is better. new teams new countries. if it fails then at least it was given a go.

obviously ur not a marketer. if u say the expansion happened becoz of the money then how do u expect to make money with a rubbish product??? do u think apple went to the market and expected customer feedback to make their phone better by the year three and make money in the year four??? concepts of marketing are the same whether it is a personal product or a sports team. u just dont go out with a 1/4baked product and hope and pray the consumer will accept it or forgive you for giving them rubbish becoz ur experimenting and trying to figure out what the market wants or what ur market is !!!! the japs were excited to watch their team , thrilled when they beat a couple of bigboys. now they have gone back to thier commuting and working life. is these guys think the japs will get goosebumps becoz of super rugger teams, they are sadly mistaken. the jap loyalties are to thier universities and company teams and last but not least to their national team. the argies on the other hand may be a different scene, becoz they do love to see the 3 nations' players in action against thier own. just chk out the situation with the 6th south african team . apparently they only have 20 players (maybe it has changed now). no coach, no sponsor, no pre-season training. it will be a rubbish conference.

Laughable. It is not NZ's job to prop up world rugby.Although, given the amount of players and coaches, along with SA,that we supply, you could be forgiven for thinking that.

"this is going to be positive for argentina and japan." Sure. And it's going to be a disaster for the rest of us.

It's essential that this Japanese team is competitive. Japanese sports fans are so fickle they make many Waratahs fans look like rusted-ons. So why in the name of all that smells of liniment did anyone in Japan allow their best player (Goromaru) sign with the Reds? On a similar vein, what are the Brumbies doing signing Argentina's brilliant halfback Tomas Cubelli, and what was the logic behind the Argentina board approving that move? I would have thought that he was absolutely central to their franchise's plans. Is it now a fact that the best players are going to be hoarded and warehoused by the unions with all the cash or sympathisers on the national union? Do we really want to create Australian versions of Toulon at the expense of developing players for the test team?

Hammett was awful at Cardiff. I understand he left for family reasons (mother dying I think, happy to be corrected) but no-one was sad to see him go. Least of all him I suspect, if he's honest.

In past seasons the super series has delivered superb rugby of the highest quality, with the new SANZAR expansion, troubled waters could prevail. For the rugby viewing public, it is the quantity of the game that places bums on seats or entices T/V’s to be tuned in. Playing across the ditch will always persuade beers to be cooled, but the long commute to SA has never excited the traveler nor home viewing public. Placing Japan and Argentina in the mix may further dilute the T/V audience. To keep ordinary fans on side, would it be more commercially astute to place teams in say HH & Sing perhaps China, bring Moscow into the competition and have two different super rivalries. True, player quality may struggle for a while but having an 18 team comp, strung out across half the globe will also have a big impact on most facets of the game and viewing public. Expansion is often a double edged sword.

Deans would be a good appointment but he'd probably be better with the test team - unless they'd allow him to do both. Be a big call to give Joseph the gig at international level - he's only had one good year at super level after a number of poor ones so lets see him back up.

And if they're so great this French club side, what happened to France in the quarters? Aren't club sides supposed to be reflected in the national sides efforts? Ours certainly are.

Point is NB, it's a nothing side. Full of expats. If they're good it's because of Kiwi sides, SH sides. So all your saying is European rugby is rubbish without them. The more your hold that view the more silly NH rugby looks. Our guys don't actually want to play there. They do it because it's better money for easier work. MUCH easier work. Ask Mitchell. I mean whoever said they cherish the jersey of Toulon. Pfff. And when the gravy train runs out, we'll still have the best sides, Toulon probably converted into an old peoples home when that happens...oh sorry, it already has been.

cuw - the expansion had to happen. there was no way that the powers that be would not give expansion a go. theres way too much money at stake here to not give it a serious concerted effort. whilst I'm not a fan of the format or the conferences its what we have and I'm excited about seeing 2 new markets, asia and south America open their doors a little to see what rugby has to offer. the new teams aren't expected to win the comp right off the bat, that's not the point. the point is to make these teams better and make the players better. the result will show I hope when these teams national teams start taking some big scalps off the top 5. first year will be the new teams taking hidings. the 2nd year will be the teams consolidating and knowing what they need fixing. 3rd and 4th year will be when we start seeing results....this is just hope though. I have no solid evidence to support my argument. but what they hey, I'm gonna follow this season with open arms and mind and try and be positive about these new things that are being brought to the super rugby table. I reckon its gonna be a feast.
