Heat vs Hurricanes: Hobart win despite century from Lynn

By Klaus Nannestad / Roar Guru

Match result:

The Hobart Hurricanes managed to defeat the Heat for the second time this BBL season despite a magnificent knock from Brisbane’s Chris Lynn.

REPORT: LYNN’S TON NOT ENOUGH TO HALT HURRICANES

Lynn was incredibly unluckly not to be on the winning side, putting together a remarkable century that saw him take apart some quality bowlers. His total of 101 came off 51 balls and included seven sixes.

However his teammates weren’t able to finish off his good work with the next highest score from a Heat batsman coming from debutant Sam Heazlett.

Sensational bowling performances from Jake Reed (3/31) and Cameron Boyce (2/22) were also instrumental in the Hurricanes victory.

The top order all made good contributions for the Hurricanes when they set a big total of 194 for the Heat to chase, most impressive was Dan Christian playing against his old side.

Christian hit four sixes in his 24-ball 56, including one that remarkably sailed out onto the roof of the Gabba.

Final score
Hobart Hurricanes 4/194
Brisbane Heat 9/179

Match preview:

With the Hobart Hurricanes sitting fifth on the table and the Brisbane Heat last, both teams are in the same positions now as they were at the end of last season, and are therefore desperate for a win. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:10pm (AEDT).

Only a week has passed since these two teams last met. In the days after that game, which the Hurricanes won by 20 runs, the Heat were convincingly defeated by a well-drilled Scorchers, whereas Hobart were afforded a welcomed rest.

Few teams have enjoyed success in Perth in recent years, but Brisbane’s comprehensive loss to the Scorchers – their third of the tournament – may be one of the most one-sided games of this season. The only other game of the competition that has been so unbalanced saw the Sydney Sixers demolish the Hurricanes in their first game.

Brisbane can take faith from the fact that the Hurricanes bounced back with a victory after that match, albeit against the Heat themselves.

The substantial losses the Heat and the Hurricanes endured were telling in many ways, but what they revealed more clearly than anything were both sides’ key batsmen.

When the Hurricanes capitulated for just 91 against the Sixers, George Bailey went against the grain with a superb 62 not out. Similarly, when the Heat were strangled by the Scorchers, only managing 117, Chris Lynn mustered up a classy 75, also unbeaten.

Both batsmen are flexible in their play – they can consolidate a poor start from their team, or push forwards from a positive start. It may be telling that when the Hurricanes beat the Heat, by 20 runs, Bailey blasted a 21-ball 40 and Lynn only made a single run. That 20-run margin was largely down to the constant fall of wickets throughout the Heat’s innings.

Brisbane batted with good aggression but ended up losing eight wickets, including two taken by former Heat player Daniel Christian.

Chasing 184, as the Heat were that match at Bellerive Oval, it is always likely the batting side will lose wickets. But while they lost eight wickets in that game, they have only managed to take seven in their three matches this tournament.

This may be partly down to the lack of a strike bowler, such as the Hurricanes’ Shaun Tait, but it is primarily down to an inability to stem the flow of runs and build pressure.

Prediction
Despite their massive slip-up in the first game, the Hurricanes have a strong side with the potential to compete for this year’s title.

But in reality, all that matters when predicting this game is that in an eight-team competition there are currently seven teams better than the Brisbane Heat. A Hurricanes win is very likely.

A truly fantastic game comes to an end with the Brisbane Heat falling 15 runs short of the Hurricane's total. Chris Lynn is incredibly unlucky to see himself on the losing side. He made an incredible century that saw him take apart some quality bowlers. Lynn's 101 came off just 51 balls and included seven sixes. He went after Tait in particular, who ended up as one of three bowlers to concede over fifty runs in the match. The quality of Lynn's hundred is highlighted by the fact the next highest score a Heat batsmen made was by the debutante Heazlett, who made 26. Despite this, the Heat may have gotten over the line if not for sensational bowling performances from Reed who took 3/31 and Cameron Boyce, who was near perfect with the ball, taking 2/22. The Hurricanes successful defense was set up by a well balanced batting performance that saw all their top order make good contributions, but most of all saw Christian demolish his old side at the innings climax. Christian hit four sixes in his 24 ball 56, including one that remarkably went onto the roof off the GABBA. Christian also managed to finish unbeaten, the Heat maybe wishing they had retained his services. The Heat's standout bowler was Samuel Badree who took 2/27. His performance along with Boyce's and Clive Roses's marks a good day for spinners despite it being a high scoring match.

Lalor gets one off the last ball, but the Heat have capitulated near the end, falling short of what could have been an incredible run chase. Christian bounced back to finish that over well. OVER BRISBANE HEAT 9/175 (20th) (Chasing 195)

A big full toss from Christian almost hits Lalor in the head. Lalor does well to avoid the ball and Christian rushes down to apologize. Lalor misses the subsequent free hit.

WICKET Floros bowled 15 Floros had to have a swing but clean misses the ball which clatters into his stumps. That also brings to an end a good spell from Reed who has improved as the night has gone on and certainly justified his selection. OVER BRISBANE HEAT 7/172 (19th) (Chasing 195)

WICKET Cutting caught long on 13 The slower ball does the trick as Cutting couldn't generate the pace he wanted to launch the ball over long on. Christian taking a composed catch on the rope.

Cutting smokes the ball back past Reed for four. That was too full from Reed, the ball almost hit the bowler as it flew past him.

Despite it ending with a six being hit off the last ball, Boyce has been sensational today. His figures of 2/22 are the best of the game and are certainly a fair representation of his performance. OVER BRISBANE HEAT 5/165 (18th) (Chasing 195)

WICKET Lynn caught behind 101 The Brisbane crowd is in dismay as their captain departs, but it is a wicket that Boyce thoroughly deserves. He has not bowled at a length the batters have been able to get under, so Lynn came down the pitch and tried to hit him over mid wicket. But a faint top edge ad a good catch from pain saw the captain depart.

A sensational direct hit from Bailey will have Lynn nervous. But the third umpire confirms the Heat captain is safe. That was a brilliant over for the Heat.
