My Australian T20 World Cup squad

By Edgar Slosh / Roar Guru

With the T20 World Cup in India coming up I have turned to see which players should make the squad.

Australia doesn’t have a great history in T20 but the players here could make that a thing of the past.

Here are my selections for the T20 squad.

David Warner
First player picked as he can hit the ball anywhere. Warner is an arrogant player that is feared by opposition bowlers.

Aaron Finch
There’s nothing he can’t do when he’s on song and he should be the Australian captain.

Chris Lynn
The toughest man to bowl to in BBL, he has shown how good he is. He is ready to take the next step to international cricket.

Shaun Marsh
So talented in T20, has all the strokes and deserves his selection.

Usman Khawaja
Khawaja has come of age and can play the game as well as any.

Mike Hussey
Mr Cricket is a no-brainer. He brings enormous experience needed on the sub continent and can close a game out better than most.

Travis Head
Head is an enormous hitter with huge potential coming in the middle to lower order.

Shane Watson
Watson is much maligned but adapted well to the shorter game. He is a hard hitter and handy bowler.

Watson is suited to batting in the middle order.

Tim Paine
The forgotten wicket keeper in Australian cricket, Paine just edges out Matthew Wade and Chris Hartley because of his superior batting. He can fit in anywhere in the order.

Brad Hogg
He’ll be playing cricket until he’s well into his 80s. Players still have trouble picking his wrong ‘un and he rarely gets belted around the ground. Plus his presence would be great for team experience and morale.

Steve O’Keefe
O’Keefe has an amazing economy rate and is hard to read, therefore he deserves his chance.

John Hastings
Intimidating bowler and hard hitting lower-order batsman. Hastings is a genuine wicket taker.

Josh Hazlewood
His line and length will be crucial in the middle overs.

Clint McKay
Wicket taker. McKay has all the tricks and is usually the first bowler picked for Australia

Jason Behrendorff
His time has come. He has a great strike rate, economy and they ability to take wickets regularly.

I have omitted Glenn Maxwell for several reasons. He often puts his individual trick shots above the good of the team.

Apologies to Steve Smith, Nathan Lyon and Shaun Tait who would be the next players picked.

I'll happily be the President of the Maxwell fan club if Ajay doesn't want the job. You're a bit wide of a few marks here, Craig.

Lots of times, Finch can't sing at all.

Only last week in his newspaper column, he re-stated that he was retired. He is flattered but he is retired. In reality, we have better batsmen and way better fieldsmen. Time passes and diminishes the fine tuning. That's why players retire.

Hodge didn't play because there was no spot for him. Ponting, the Waughs and Martyn were better. The grudge thing is silly Victorian sadness.

Laughlin is older than Hastings and Hazlewood and the same age as McKay. Tye is the same age as Hastings. Having said that age should not come into it if you still possess the skills. My pace attack would be Hastings, Richardson, Hazlewood, Laughlin with Tye as reserve. If McKay was a chance he would have been picked in the world cup and this ODI squad.

Why was Hodge marginalised. I have often wondered why he did not play so much more for his country. In particular short format. He is still one of Australia's finest T20 players. Was he not dropped after scoring a test ton?

Are you president of the Maxwell fan club. He was the third highest Aussie run scorer with a whopping 147 runs with a single fifty. Wow. The top Aussie run scorer was not even playing for the country of his birth, Tom Cooper who put on the duds for Holland.

I'd try to fit Behrendorff, Klinger, Zampa, and Paine in my squad. It would be hard though. Finch and S.Marsh who I'd usually leave out, are in good form, which makes it harder again. I don't think the selectors have a choice but to put Lynn in their squad.

Cook had just led England to the wrong end of a 5-0 whitewash. If I was a selector and captain entitled said that to me I would gladly accept it. At least Pietersen brought crowds in.

I wanna leave out Maxwell and put in James Faulkner for Watson. Where are your specialist T20 bowlers. Laughlin and Richardson? Is Mike Hussey still available for short format cricket? If so he would certainly be in my squad. Lyon and Boyce would be my spinners. SOK is very accurate but not a big wicket taker. It is in India after all.

I would have Maxwell nowhere near my T20 side. One fifty in 25 internationals at #20 is hardly earth shattering. He keeps getting picked because he bowls some useful spin. There are more consistent players in domestic cricket that also bowl useful spin. Even Finch has not exactly set the T20 world alight. His world record ton and only five fifties from 22 matches.

I like your squad Edgar. Excellent T20 batsmen, some fine bowlers. Australia could win with that squad. I'm especially impressed with your top 6 batsmen, the cream of the T20 game and giving young Head a go as the seventh is a good move. Well selected.
