Wellington vs Brisbane highlights: Penalty overturned in goalless draw

By Joshua Thomas / Roar Guru

Match Review:

There were no goals but plenty of action as the Wellington Phoenix and Brisbane Roar played out an entertaining goalless draw.

REPORT: PHOENIX, ROAR IN SCORELESS DRAW

The big talking point of the game was a penalty that was awarded to the Roar for a Phoenix handball in the first half that was then overturned after deliberation between the referee and his sideline officials.

Brisbane dominated the game with possession but the Phoenix were able to hold on with debutant Dylan Fox in defence a real highlight.

A frantic last few minutes and energetic subs couldn’t break the game open with the full 90 minutes ending goalless.

Brisbane extend their lead at the top, and Wellington remain within touching distance of the top six.

Two depleted teams showed they still have plenty of fight, and they pick up a point each.

Final Score
Wellington Phoenix 0
Brisbane Roar 0

Match Preview:

The Wellington Phoenix msut rise from the ashes against a Brisbane Roar side currently on top of the table. Join The Roar from 5pm (AEDT) for all the action.

Things have gone from bad to worse for the Phoenix in recent weeks, with a 3-1 loss to bottom of the table Central Coast last week compounding their woes.

Clinging to their place in the top six, Wellington have picked up just two points in four games, derailing a strong start to their season.

Inconsistent – as seems to often be the case – the Phoenix are capable of challenging the best, with Roy Krishna and Roly Bonevacia two players who can determine a match. Unfortunately, both are unavailable for this clash. Bonevacia is out through suspension, along with Manny Muscat and Alex Rodriquez, while Krishna joins Alex Rufer, Louis Fenton and Ben Sigmund on the sidelines with an ankle injury.

In some good news, Jeffery Sarpong and Albert Reira are back in the squad, along with a trio of promoted youngsters.

Although Brisbane’s play hasn’t always been pretty, they’re on the cusp of five straight wins. With Jamie Maclaren firing, Thomas Broich assisting and Henrique living up to his supersub status, John Aloisi must be optimistic of the Roar cementing their spot at the top as they head across the Ditch.

In team news for the Roar, Olyroos duty looms large, with top scorer Jamie Maclaren missing, along with James Donachie and Brandon Borrello. They do however welcome back Steven Lustica from injury, and have promoted Corey Brown, Jerome Polenz, Devante Clut and Shannon Brady.

Join The Roar from 5pm (AEDT) for this clash of two depleted teams.

Only the ball should be restarted at the middle of the field if there was neither a “handball” nor a “push by Henrique”. However, then why the referee blew the whistle immediately upon the contact between Durante and Henrique. So, still the referee made a mistake. Whatever the case may be, this is a low level mistake.

Despite we have already quite used to the poor judgement and practice of Australian referees, it has become unbearable upon another poor performances of referees this week. Last week, two poor penalty-related decisions were wrongly made. This week, another two poor decisions are made again. 1) First of all the restart of the match in the Phoenix-vs-Roar match was wrong. Every referee may make mistake. He blows the whistle after his decision from his point of view. He may not be right sometimes. So, both players of the two teams appeal. In this case, they were Henrique and Durante. Upon the appeal, the referee may or may not consult the assistant referee. It is in his discretion. If he chooses to consult the assistance referee because of a new information, he is fully credited of doing correctly. In this case, probably Durante complained about Henrique's pushing to make him touching the ball accidentally. Up to this point. The referee acted correctly. However, he made a mistake in restarting the match. If he could see that Durante's hand ball, a reverse of decision on giving a penalty meant that Henrique committed infringement in pushing Durante. If so, the match should be restarted by giving Phoenix a free kick at the point where Henrique committed the infringement (this is inside the Phoenix's box). The match should not be restarted at the middle of the match. I was so confused when I watched on TV that the match was restarted at the middle of the field after a reversal of a penalty decision. This is a low level mistake. 2) Secondly, there were mistakes in the refereeing relating to the reversal a restart of the match in the match of Melbourne City vs Wanderers. If the referee blows the whistle, then the match restarts. In the history of soccer matches, many players restart the match immediately and it does not breach the rule. In this particular case, the referee stopped the match to resolve some issues. It is normal. However, if he blew the whistle, the Wanderers could restart the match immediately. The only excuse is that Patrick Kisnorbo is the captain. If Kisnorbo was the captain, then the referee should give him time to move back after the discussion/briefing. It is like giving time to the defenders to build a man-wall in a free kick. If he blew the whistle, he should not reverse it. This was the second mistake. The third mistake is explaining in front of the camera. He should release his decision to the mediate indirectly.

On this occasion, I don't agree with you.

Careful Catnap. You will have the football cognoscenti descending upon you in their droves. I believe Aloisi is endeavouring to eliminate this negative aspect from Roar's play, but it is much harder to eliminate bad habits than teach good habits. BTW, I agree with your sentiments 100%.
