Clut likely to leave Roar next season

By Vince Rugari / Wire

Off-contract Brisbane Roar youngster Devante Clut has been blocked from a move to A-League rivals Newcastle Jets and looks set to leave the club at the end of the season.

Clut, a Young Socceroos representative, has played just 58 minutes in total since the arrival of coach John Aloisi in the off-season and is stuck behind a wealth of quality midfielders in arguably the competition’s deepest squad.

At least three other A-League clubs have shown interest in the 20-year-old – who won the Australian leg of Nike’s `The Chance’ competition – while it’s believed Brisbane recently shut down an approach for an immediate transfer to the Jets during the January transfer window.

Unless Clut can somehow break into the Roar’s senior team before the season is out and establish himself as a first-choice player, he will exit Brisbane, where he has spent the last three years, in search of more game-time.

“We’re going to look at this very carefully,” Clut’s agent John Bozinovski told AAP.

“Brisbane was the right club when we first went there, because of what he could learn from the other players and Brisbane being a champion team.

“That, he’s done. But we’ve got to think about Devante’s career.

“The next stage of his apprenticeship is games, as many games as possible. We’ll make that decision accordingly.”

Clut appeared poised for a breakout campaign after a strong finish to last season, including two vital goals in the AFC Champions League and brace in a friendly match against Villarreal, but he has been unable to earn a single start under Aloisi.

Even with the depleted Roar missing three Olyroos players, Clut still wasn’t able to make the bench for Sunday’s scoreless draw against Wellington Phoenix.

“We have to just go on what the coaches see at training and support it because they see him day in, day out,” Bozinovski said.

“At the end of the day, different coaches have different things they look for a player to do. You’ve got to learn to adapt.

“It’s a good learning curve for Devante or any other young player. He’s just got to continue working hard.”

Seems pretty simple to me; insane natural talent... play him more. Its a long season, and its good to give players a rest every once in a while. Broich and Corona could sit a game out, throw him in. Id imagine every one rates him more then lustica and petratos. He would be stellar in a no. 10 role though. He ran rampant in that Villareal match.... I do miss that. Infact it doesnt matter if Clut starts or is subbed, just give the kid match time. To lose him would be rather shambolic.

I see. Good point, which I've seen you make before JB. Looking over match reports, Clut came on as sub for Maclaren or Borrello in the first six games this season, late in the game. I don't think we've seen him since the Perth Glory game in mid November, which incidentally was the game Henrique returned (with a goal). At least that tells us that Aloisi has experimented, maybe hoping Clut would fill a striker role during this Ollyroo absence period, but prefers others at this stage. It's good to go over those previous games and match reports. No win has been easy. Last year proved the value of depth, we need good players on the bench and in the youth squad. Love this club.

Lionheart - In this latest comment you may have inadvertently "hit the jackpot". Lets look ar Roar's midfield possibilities and the mind boggles. We have Clut, Petratos,Lustica,Corona,Hervas,Mackay, and probably Broich all capable of playing across the park and let's be honest 7 into 3 or 4 positions doesn't go. So what has to be done?we have a player at L.B. who has already announced his retirement at the end of the season and yet he is consistently picked. We consistently see young McLaren left to plough a "lone furrow" up front by himself ,a job that indoing has seen him substituted quite regularly despite being the club's leading scorer. In Peratos there is the making of a very good winger but he is consistently used in that over populated midfield, while very good players watch from the bench.I've said it before and I know another Roar fan agrees, this team doesn't need huge improvement,it needs "tweaking" to make it an even better team. It doesn't take a lot of imagination to work out where the tweaking is needed but by now, half way through the season, the experimentation should have started to findout just what is this team's best "run on "eleven Cheers jb

You're not being serious, he has more talent in one toe than either McKay, Lustica or Petratos. This kid is a real footballer in the mould of a Rogic or Ikonomidis or Caceres.......................the others are just plodders. Another brilliant young player that isn't getting an opportunity either and I cannot understand why, is the Mariners young gun Anthony Kalik!

and I see on the Roar website, a young Jesse Daly is named among the best in the NYL last weekend. Then there's the young guy they brought back early in the year as an injury replacement (?). I recall our previous interim coach explaining why Clut wasn't starting every week, too much competition.

Steve, I probably needed to keep it simple for you: one injury away from a bench position ..... in a position he CAN play in. We've lost a striker, a winger, and a center back to Olyroos duty. Clut fills none of those positions does he? C'mon Steve, everyone sees great potential in him, Roar obviously do otherwise he wouldn't be there in the first place, but under a cap system you can't play everyone/keep everyone. Hopefully he signs for one more year and if not hd goes to another HAL club, it's no big deal - just look at the quality of youth we had to let go at the end of last season. Jackson also at the Jets is developing well with first team football, Clut has a choice to make - stay or go; sounds like his agent wants him to go. Good luck, he's a good kid but he's not better (yet) than the first five in line for midfield starting positions, that's according to Aloisi who is not dumb.

That must be the 157th time you've written that. Because he got offered a contract by WSW when?

Only played a handful of games and showed more in them than Lustica ever has for us just as an example. I see more in Devante Clut than Petratos have ever showed for us or SydneyFC. Only one injury away from a bench position you say? He didnt even figure on the bench with the Roar's Olyroos players missing.

To be fair he only played a handful of games last season (he just happens to score some cracking goals making the starts memorable) and Roar would be mad to let him go mid-season unless someone can guarantee there will be no injuries to the existing starting line-up; the squad was planned for the season in July and replacing him now if he was allowed to leave for the Jets would be very hard, we'd fix a problem at the jets by creating a potential problem at Roar. He's only 1 injury away from a bench position so JA needs to keep him until the seasons end, as he is contracted to.

Devante Clut has crazy potential. Goal scoring midfielders are a rarity at the Roar and that's what he is. It a shame he cant get a game in Brisbane. I kind of don't get the we aren't going to play him, but we wont let you leave thing. Its just ridiculous. He was getting opportunities last season and was shining, under Aloisi he has disappeared.

Excellent editing JB, agree completely with your correction. I've heard Aloisi say, about scoring goals, 'it'll come'. I've taken that as meaning he thinks we're doing the right thing (to score). I'm not schooled in the game as yourself and many others on this website, but I believe, comparing to some EPL I watch, our strikers shots on target that don't score are invariably on target for the goalie too, aimed at him maybe. In other words, I think we could improve our final strike to make the keepers' job more difficult. It seems to me that the difference with the great strkers (like Suarez) is not just positioning but also that final touch goes more often where the keeper doesn't. Last Sunday we were outdone by an outstretched keeper's foot (that was a lagging foot really, not an outstretched one) and a bit of woodwork that was an inch too low, both were missed shots by the narrowest of margins and could well have been goals on another day. So I probably agree with Aloisi, it'll come.

Lionheart - Don't disagree with any point you put here but if you will allow me just one minor correction. When you say "we would like more goals" I think that should be worded differently to say "We would like to see the team score the goals their overall play merits". That throws up a slightly different problem for JA and to me it is going to be interesting to see if ,when, and how, he is going to attack that problem. I have my own thoughts on that ,do you??????Cheers jb

An A-league club would take him because he can add to their midfield, especially CCM. Festering away in the NPL is good for nobody.

I hear you Vic, but I disagree. There are ten coaches in the league, and my bet is every one of the other nine will swap their ladder position with Aloisi. It's too early for a report card, and I think the team has stated their measure of success - win the title, anything less is a failure - so we'll wait and see. But there is evidence to conclude some things about John Aloisi - he has brought strong leadership to the club, he kept the players and staff focused in the off-season on the games ahead amid significant distractions over pay and the club's very future, he has identified, attracted and brought some very good players to the club (Maclaren, Corona, Hervas), he has improved squad fitness and reduced injuries by a significant margin (v last season especially). Under his coaching we have dominated all bar 2 or 3 matches in the A League so far and we have maintained an attractive and attacking game. There is no doubt we are title contenders, albeit, as I said above, it's far too early yet for such predictions. OK, we would like more goals but there's no ground to toss the coach yet. I'm quite sure if Clut was good enough he'd be in the side.

Fully agree with your sentiment, Roar do really well on youth development historically and that's only going to get better as they improve and expand their development program. How good can they be if they had an academy I wonder? I'm not sure on JAs thinking on Clut as he hasn't said much, but it's pretty simple - he needs to play more football and unfortunately the strctures aren't there for that in Australia. Yes he can play NYL and NPL but that's a standard that's too low to continue his development and breaking into the first team squad seems just out of his reach. Sadly this is another quality player that's likely to leave, he isn't the first as you'll know and he won't be the last. Hopefully someone else picks him up in the HAL.

As I just mentioned above Waz, he's been playing NYL (not last game as he was moved into senior squad). That Roar NYL squad has some pretty good players, as you know, and recently is featuring a number of senior players including DeVere, Theo and Hervas (who played a full NYL game just last week). The NYL does play NPL between season's, and I take your point about the gap to A League. But I think Roar does a pretty fine job with our youth players and squad. They set high standards, as we saw last year when they provided the core of our senior team. What other club, maybe except MV, can do this? As you know, we let a lot of youth players go this year (12 I think) and at least some of them have found senior spots at other clubs. I'm not that familiar with the NYL squad, but I do hope we have another goal scoring midfielder under development for the senior team post McKay, Corona and Broich, which isn't that far off. Hervas hopefully will be around for a few more years, same for Lustica and Petratos, but we'll need more. I had thought that Clut was the man they were developing. He certainly brings a game to life with his attacking attitude.

I've said it before but it's worth repeating again - 'Aloisi has NO Clut as a coach!'
