World No.5 Maria Sharapova will need to be on her game as she faces talented American Lauren Davis in the Australian Open third round. Join The Roar for live scores from 12:30pm (AEDT).

Sharapova has cruised through the opening two rounds of the Australian Open, defeating Nao Hibino and Aliaksandra Sasnovich in straight sets. The Russian however should expect a far tougher test today.

Davis is an aggressive player who will cause Sharapova significant problems if the Russian once again struggles with her serving.

The 22-year-old is also very quick around the court and she usually relies on her strong backhand to finish off points.

This is the first meeting between Sharapova and Davis and one expects a tough contest between a rising star and an accomplished performer.

An Australian Open finalist last year, Sharapova is a master of playing matches at her tempo. Her focus and intensity on-court makes her one of the finest competitors on the WTA tour.

Throw in major weapons off the forehand and backhand side and Sharapova still has what it takes to secure her fifth grand slam title.

Given the magnitude of upsets thus far on the women’s side of the draw, it wouldn’t surprise to see Sharapova succumb to Davis, but the Russian should produce enough quality when it counts to sneak into the fourth round.

    Sharapova in three sets.
