Cohesion will come for Reds: Graham

By Adrian Warren / Wire

Queensland coach Richard Graham insists time will help fix his team’s woes after an opening-round Super Rugby loss in which the circus surrounding Japanese player Ayumu Goromaru went into overdrive.

The Reds were outscored 30-10 and four tries to one by the NSW Waratahs in Sydney on Saturday night, but the unflattering scoreline doesn’t tell the complete story.

While a more clinical NSW deserved their win, it might have been a different story had Queensland converted early try-scoring opportunities and had the poise and class to capitalise on plenty of second-half possession.

Queensland had the edge in the scrum, winning a first-half tight-head despite having skipper and lock Rob Simmons in the sin-bin at the time.

Graham accepted a lack of discipline was a major issue for the Reds, who also had prop Sam Talakai binned.

Goromaru, who starred for Japan in last year’s World Cup, made an earlier-than-expected introduction to Super Rugby, as he came off the bench in the 27th minute to replace injured debutant and centre Henry Taefu.

He had three shots at goal landing two of them, but had few opportunities to showcase other aspects of his game as the Reds struggled to shift the ball out wide.

Graham felt the injury to Taefu and the consequent backline reshuffle affected the Reds’ cohesion.

“You can see there just the lack of combination,” Graham said.

“The new shape that we’re attempting to play, I felt we caused them a lot of problems, we made a lot of clean line breaks.

“But clearly having to mix guys around early in the game wasn’t ideal.

“It will come in time there’s no doubt.

“We’d gone in with a fairly settled group from the first two trials particularly the 9-13 combination.

“But then we lost him (Taefu) early.”

Goromaru didn’t have much impact on the game, but his mere presence at Allianz Stadium was enough to spark mass interest amongst the Japanese media, who probably outnumbered the local scribes in the press box.

“He’s a good footballer isn’t he?” Graham said.

“I thought he along with the other 22 blokes dug in and had a real crack.”

Asked what Goromaru needed to do to earn a starting spot Graham said “he’s just got to keep training hard.”

Waratahs coach Daryl Gibson and his captain and openside flanker Michael Hooper both said Goromaru didn’t get enough ball to show what he could do.

Saia is a 'casual fan favourite'. I've been calling out his bs for years, starting with his height which is overstated by 10cm. His tackling style is the 'grass cutter', acceptable for a half back but not for a hooker.

About time someone mention this. I think Frisbee has been great at times but he was atrocious in this match. I'm not sure if he had a big head knock or something but he was so slow to the breakdown which has hardly ever well cleaned out or at least protected. His passing was very slow and directionless. I thought McIntyre did well with what he had. I didn't think the Reds backs were that bad their forwards were just disappointing. They need Horwill and Higginbotham back in the team stat.

The reds should get players from Fiji or Samoa as they are not producing any of their own from their beep test academies

Reece Hodge is actually a natural fly half, not a winger, never played on the song for Manly, only inside backs & occasionally fullback.

I would ask the coach after the match what the gameplay was and the counter to any injuries that may occur the Reds looked like headless chooks going through the motions how much longer before the coach is sacked for impersonating a coach

I like Shatz; he does everything pretty well. There is no one else anywhere near as good at #8 in the Reds squad and the scrum is in great shape. The lineout will continue to be good while Simmo runs it. If things are to be fixed the talent must be found in the squad. Test centre Ant F should be starting instead of Tofu. Junior Laloifi was the top try scorer in the NRC and he was close to the best break-maker in the NRC. Junion will score tries and he has a good combination with KH. McIntyre does not stand out in club games.- I watched him last year. Jake seems to decide what to do before the halfback passes the ball to him. He does not draw any defenders. His only three options are: Pass (most of the time) to the senior players outside; run up and get smashed; ror do a crappy inaccurate kick. He scored a nice try because of the great work of the forwards and the opposition was shocked he did not pass to Kerevi. Greene is a much better ball runner and his passing game is probably on par. Goromaru better start doing the out of hand kicking.

So if Thomson (former All Black) and Hanson (Wallaby) aren't "world class" my whole point can be completely dismissed and we can forget about the other losses of O'Connor, Genia, Cooper, Horwill, Slipper, Douglas and Gill?? We played them at their ground. NSW are on the slide. We are on the way up. You can put the boot into us as much as you like but I'd be more concerned if I was a NSW fan. You'll never win a title when 7 men can own your scrum. Is that when they were thinking about the Brumbies, when they were being shoved around. Should have been a penalty try.

Do you understand that you are only strengthening my point by saying that it is more hurtful to the Reds to lose Thomson than if NSW lost Dennis?

Let me quote your response to the article: "Yes, let’s go into the first game without a backup plan if our 12 goes down injured, that sounds like an excellent idea." How do you know that he had no back-up plan?

Let me quote from the article you must not have read: Graham felt the injury to Taefu and the consequent backline reshuffle affected the Reds’ cohesion. “You can see there just the lack of combination,” Graham said. Now, guess what training is for? If you guessed building combinations, give yourself a gold star. I respect that losing guys is not ideal and is bound to hurt a little, but how they could have only one workable combination is beyond me.

actually he got hit illegally by skelton, in a few plays before the runaway try was scored down the right flank. it was amazing that both the ref and touchie did not see that hit from the side of the ruck inside nsw territory , considering the size of skelton :) he did well to stay on after getting flattened ; where was the tmo who usually jumps in about foulplay???

To describe Thomson and Hanson who are good super rugby players, as world class is gilding the lily somewhat. Richard Graham is lucky the Tahs started thinking about the Brumbies match after the first 25 minutes.

I sat and watched the Tahs Reds game, occasionally yelling at the TV telling MacIntire to stand up flatter. The forward set piece was great but the ruck was no so good. But the real fault was MacIntire standing soo deep, even from set play not any Red ran an inside ball or a scissor move, Frisby passed to MacIntire and he just shovelled it on and the centre got tackled well behind the gain line every time. The Tahs made more ground in defence than attack. I was not impressed by the Red outside backs at all, Kerevi tried hard to crash ball but he was meet well behind the gain line all the time. I have to say I would give MacIntire half a game next week and then give Green the other half and pick one of the two that played better and stick with him. Hunt is not the answer at FH and I have my doubts that he is the answer in the long term at all in any position, the same is said for CFS who does not impress and has not for all the time and chances that he has had. The Reds had no real game plan and no idea what the word variation meant. They were getting thumped with the way that they were playing and still they persisted right throughout the entire game. If it's not working why keep doing the same thing???? A good club coach could coach this side to a better performance.
