Lleyton Hewitt’s role as Davis Cup captain just got a bit more complicated than he originally hoped.

The Australians went down in their Davis Cup clash with America 3-1 on Sunday at Kooyong, which means they have to play a qualifier in order to get back into the world group.

The loss meant Hewitt’s task was going to be hard either way, but now he has to sort out the outburst between two of Australia’s most talented players.

Bernard Tomic had a go at Nick Kyrgios between the change of sets against the big serving John Isner on Sunday, saying Kyrgios was not really sick. You could clearly see that Tomic was frustrated by his absence. Kyrgios later aimed back on Twitter.

There seems that there is no team spirit in the Davis Cup team, which could be because of an ego clash between Kyrgios and Tomic. There is no doubt Hewitt has to sort out this mess before things get heated.

The Davis Cup is a team game and to have those two carrying on at each other is not a good look for the Australian team. A Davis Cup team should be a happy place where everyone backs each other, you need to urge your teammates on to victory as much as you can (in which the Americans did a really good job).

When Tomic made those comments at the break during the match against Isner it seemed weird. First of all, shouldn’t Tomic be worried on how he was playing against Isner and what to do, instead of how sick Kyrgios was?

While Tomic was complaining you could clearly see Hewitt trying to fire him up, but Tomic was not having it.

Tomic’s mind was out of the match and he therefore blamed it on someone else. But he should have taken responsibility because at the end of the day he was out there playing and not Kyrgios.

The mess is a big one to clean, but if anyone can clean it up it will be Hewitt.

Hopefully he can turn them around in time for the Olympics and the Davis Cup qualifier in September.
