Ireland and the Netherlands have been knocked out of the World Twenty20 as rain forced abandonment of their second games of Group A on Friday.
Ireland’s match against Bangladesh lasted only eight overs while not a single delivery could be bowled in the Netherlands’ game against Oman.
Ireland and the Netherlands each had one point after two games, leaving Bangladesh and Oman to fight it out for a place in the Super 10s with three points each after two games.
Electing to field, Ireland failed to restrict Bangladesh as the group favourite reached 2-94 in eight overs after the game was reduced to 12 overs per side owing to a rain delay.
Opener Tamim Iqbal bludgeoned a 26-ball 47 with three fours and four sixes and added 61 runs with Soumya Sarkar for the opening wicket but the rain returned to stop the game once again.
Iqbal lofted the ball with ease while also playing some fine pull and sweep shots to frustrate the Ireland bowlers in his short stay in the middle.
Bangladesh’s final game against Oman on Sunday will decide who joins India, Pakistan, Australia and New Zealand in group 2 of the next stage.
Oman pulled off a surprise two-wicket win over Ireland in its first game.
“For it to end like this after having lost to Bangladesh in a closely-fought game, we are gutted,” said Netherlands captain Peter Borren.
“We could have done a lot of things better in that game, it will haunt us for a while. We don’t get a lot of opportunities at this stage.”
