Rugby league has a funny way of surprising us. The more it changes, the more it stays the same but for all the right reasons. While we think we know what is around the next corner, footy shocks us all – again and again and again.

On Monday night, Wests Tigers smashed Manly-Warringah and they did it again without hooker Robbie Farah. Every passing week Farah becomes an afterthought as the mesmerising speed and raw talent of James Tedesco, Mitch Moses and Luke Brooks improve at supersonic speeds. On the other side of the field was a Manly team boasting Daly Cherry-Evans, Jamie Lyon, Dylan Walker, Martin Taupau, Nate Myles, Steve Matai, Tom and Jake Trbojevic. It’s a funny game, rugby league.

And what about the Sydney Roosters?

Oh how the mighty have fallen.

The Tricolours are 0-2 and are odds-on to make it 0-3 as they face the daunting task of North Queensland and Johnathan Thurston in Townsville.

One of the great sporting venues on this planet hosts bitter rivals on Sunday when St George Illawarra play South Sydney at the Sydney Cricket Ground where the Dragons celebrate their famous eleven straight premiership victories.

Centre-cum-fullback Kurt Mann has been punted for fullback-cum-centre-cum-fullback-cum-centre-cum-fullback Josh Dugan.

Will the switch be enough for the Dragons, who were terrible last weekend against Cronulla, or will the Sam Burgess homecoming party continue for the Rabbitohs?

EVERY NRL GAME THIS SEASON WILL BE LIVE ON FOXTEL

Mary Konstantopoulos
Tips:
Cowboys, Eels, Raiders, Broncos, Tigers, Storm, Rabbitohs, Sharks (Powerplay).

“The poor old Roosters have had a tough start to the season, first being towelled by the Rabbitohs and then narrowly going down to the Raiders. I am tempted to tip an upset here, but the Cowboys have the hometown advantage and will be looking to bounce back following their loss to the Eels. Speaking of whom, I’m going with my heart here and tipping the Eels, though Moses Mbye is going to very hard to contain.

“Can dreams come true? Can the Tigers make it three in a row? This tipster says yes. With Teddy, all things are possible.

“It hurts me to watch the Sea Eagles play the way they have been playing and I don’t even like them. Welcome to first grade, Coach Barrett. Even with Gallen out, the Sharks forwards will be too big and too strong for the Sea Eagles. Cherry-Evans and Walker to continue to struggle and Ben Barba to impress at fullback.”

Tim Gore
Tips:
Cowboys (Powerplay), Eels, Raiders, Broncos, Titans, Warriors, Rabbitohs, Sharks.

“The round opens with a clash in Townsville, Cowboys to bounce back winning a close one against a determined Roosters.

“The Raiders were lucky last weekend and I expect them to jag another tight on against a determined Knights.

“Warriors to keep their coach in his job for one more week by beating the Storm while Souths to beat a resurgent Dragons who are desperate to atone for their dismal effort against the Sharks.”

Lachlan Bickley
Tips:
Cowboys, Bulldogs, Raiders, Broncos, Titans, Storm, Rabbitohs (Powerplay), Sharks.

“Whilst the Cowboys may have lost on Saturday night they have the pedigree and the home field advantage, hard to imagine how the Roosters resurrect themselves in time for this one after back to back grueling afternoon games.

“One of the most interesting games in the round and a tough one to predict. I’m taking the Dogs only because… honestly I don’t even know. This one’s a coin flip.

“Paul McGregor has seen the light and returned Josh Dugan to fullback but will it be enough to improve the Dragons anaemic offence? Probably not, I’ll take the Bunnies.”

Tips:
Cowboys (Powerplay), Bulldogs, Raiders, Broncos, Tigers, Warriors, Rabbitohs, Sea Eagles.

“Putting my powerplay on North Queensland after a shock loss last weekend to Parramatta. They return home to 1300Smiles Stadium and face a struggling Sydney Roosters outfit.

“Tipping a couple of upsets in the Warriors and Sea Eagles. I think the Warriors have the type of squad to worry Melbourne and no team can be as bad as they have been for so long.

“Weird things happen on Monday nights and Manly were pretty good in patches against Wests. Yes the Sharks did it easy last weekend but I expect the Sea Eagles to win a narrow one – maybe even golden point.”
