Crusaders vs Kings highlights: Crusaders demolish woeful Kings

By Nathan Farebrother / Roar Guru

Match result:

The Crusaders got the job done in what could have been a really tricky affair early on in the match.

REPORT: CRUSADERS GIVE KINGS A HIDING

The Kings looked good in patches throughout the clash, specifically in the first 10 minutes so it wasn’t an ideal start, or a complete performance from the Crusaders because of what they showed early on.

The Crusaders muscled up in attack, really applying the heat at the contest and at the collision. The Kings found no room to move in attack, really lacked options but they did put it in a good effort, really pushing the Crusaders in some areas.

Realistically, the Kings were their own worst enemy, dropping ball, missing tackles, letting their opponents move over the advantage line with ease.

The Kings still managed to score three tries on the Crusaders, definitely a positive point for them.

For the Crusaders, they will welcome back a number of their first-grade players over the next couple of weeks which will significantly strengthen their squad.

However, a number of their fringe players really stepped up tonight. Mo’unga looks at home in the 10 jersey and played really well.

Final score
Crusaders 57
Kings 24

The Kings are looking to improve on their performance from 2013, where they went down 55-20 to the seven-time Super Rugby champions.

In what will likely be a dreadful mismatch, highlighted by the nine changes Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder has made, the Crusaders will rest Kieran Read, along with internationals Andy Ellis, Joe Moody and Codie Taylor.

Howeve Ryan Crotty returns from a thumb injury to feature in his first game this season.

Coach Todd Blackadder has alluded to the fact that they won’t be taking this game lightly, and need to work on their defence.

“We are trying to focus more on our defence, get it right and take pride in that,” Blackadder said.

The Kings rank last in eight of the 21 key statistic areas, including tackle percentage (78%) and average missed tackles (28), and sit second last in average points scored (16).

In better news, the Kings have some promising young talent coming through the ranks.

Prediction
The Crusaders will simply be to strong, especially at home.

Crusaders by 21.

'80 - Nadolo really causing havoc at the end of the match, breaking tackles left, right and centre. A handling error from the Crusaders right on their 22m line gifts the Kings another opportunity. A lineout for the Kings here.

'75 - YELLOW CARD! Cloete given his marching orders for playing the halfback when the Crusaders look certain to score. Right in front of the posts 5m out. Crusaders opt for the scrum, and are sure to capitalise on the Kings lack of men.

A play that has summed up the Kings night was minutes ago, when their flyhalf Fouche received the ball, looked to his right and there was no one to pass the ball too. du Plessis on for Visser, Oelofse on for Astle, Botha on for Adriaanse (KINGS)

'61 - TRY! Macilai scores under the posts after wonderful defence from the Crusaders. The Kings could not breathe in attack, in fact they ended up going backwards. Ball spills out the side and is stolen by Samu, who offloads to Drummond, who bobbles the ball and offloads it to Macilai who breaks away, fooling defenders to cross the try-line. Mo'unga converts again. Crusaders - 50 Kings - 17

'55 - Crusaders penalised for not releasing the tackler in their own territory after a half-break from the Kings. Great passage of play by the Kings, seemed to have brought momentum back into their favour. Kings kick for touch and get a lineout, then off that lineout, the Crusaders make contact with the Kings jumper in the air. They kick for the corner and have another lineout 5m out from the Crusaders line. Taufua off, Samu on (CRU)

In the context of the match, that try hurts the Crusaders and with the new laws is much needed for the Kings.

'52 - TRY! Free-flowing and leaky defence from both teams. The replacement hooker of the Kings crosses after a damaging run starting about 20m out from the Crusaders line. Powerful running, bumps off the would-be defender and just gets over the line. Great solo effort. Fouche converts. Crusaders - 43 Kings - 17
