Perth Glory vs Melbourne City highlights: City undone by Glory

By Joshua Thomas / Roar Guru

Match Result:

Perth Glory have proven their finals credentials after seeing off Melbourne City in a 3-2 win.

REPORT: KEOGH SETS RECORD IN GLORY WIN

It was a fairly lacklustre first half as both teams struggled for accuracy in the final third.

Glory created more with the ball but were unable to find the back of the net with Andy Keogh and Gyorgy Sandor slicing good chances wide.

The first 45 minutes was blighted by two injuries with Chris Harold and Michael Zullo succumbing to respective injuries.

A quiet first half gave way to a frenetic second as Keogh etched his name in to the record books with an opening goal in the 55th minute. A Nebojsa Marinkovic free-kick found Diego Castro at the back post who was able to get a touch and set it up for Keogh to tap home. That made it a record eighth consecutive A-league game with a goal for the Irish striker.

Keogh then turned creator as he lobbed the ball over the City defence to find Gyorgy Sandor in the 67th minute. Sandor finished cooly past Sorensen to extend Glory’s lead.

There was one more to come for the Glory in the 71st minute as Keogh again turned provider. He found an electric Diego Castro in the box with a cross and the Spaniard volleyed with pin-point accuracy to the bottom right of goal past Sorensen.

Bruno Fornaroli was to issue a quick reply for City two minutes later however as he managed to keep the ball after a Shane Lowry challenge, dribble past Ante Covic and slide the ball into an empty net. That increased the Uruguayan’s record tally for the season to a phenomenal 23 goals.

Although second best for much of the game. City gave Glory a bit of a scare late on as Marc Marino added a second City goal in injury time. The substitute was found well by Aaron Mooy and finished calmly past Covic.

It was to be a Perth Glory win in the end though as they continued their recent hot form and put a real dent in City’s hopes of winning the Premiers Plate.

Final Score:
Perth Glory 3
Melbourne City 2

Match Preview:

Perth Glory are looking to continue their late surge up the A-League ladder when they welcome last round’s leaders Melbourne City to nib Stadium. Join us on The Roar from 7pm (AEST) for this clash between two in-form teams.

Perth have a had glorious run of form lately, winning nine of their last ten games, to see them sit in fifth and with a finals spot in their pocket.

It wasn’t pretty but Perth wracked up another win last week against the Newcastle Jets, triumphing 2-1. Andy Keogh converted a penalty to extend his run of goals to seven straight games. Will he add another tonight?

City have shown real consistency over the past month as they reached top spot for the first time all season. They arrive in Perth looking for their fifth straight win.

It was the Bruno Fornaroli show last week, as City brushed aside the Wellington Phoenix courtesy of two goals and a sublime assist from the Uruguayan. They did it without marquee man Aaron Mooy, who the week before helped steer the side to a 3-1 win over then-A-League leaders Brisbane Roar.

If they can stop Perth tonight, City will have one hand on the Premier’s Plate.

Perth’s hopes of continuing their fine form are boosted by the return of Josh Risdon from Socceroos duty, while Diogo Ferreira and Kosta Petratos are both promoted into the squad, with Dino Djulbic falling out through suspension.

City are boosted as well, with Socceroos Aaron Mooy and Alex Wilkinson both returning to the squad.

With just one loss in their past ten games, will Perth Glory prove their finals credentials, or will Melbourne City go one step closer to securing the Premier’s Plate? Join The Roar from 7pm (AEST) for all the action.
