Round Summary:

The wind and fast greens played havoc during the second round of The Masters which brought Australia’s Jason Day right back into contention.

Incredibly, just four players shot under par for the round. Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Daniel Berger, and Troy Merrit sharing the equal best score of 71.

At one stage it looked like an amateur was going to show up the field. American Bryson DeChambeau was on track for a 69 and was just one stroke behind leader Jordan Spieth when he had a shocking drive on the 18th. His snap-hook was so bad he was forced to play a provisional ball which also went left.

DeChambeau scrambled for a triple bogey, but is still well in reach at Even par.

Jason Day (+1) had a slight advantage in going in one of the earlier tee times when the wind was not as strong. Once again his front nine was a lot better than the back, but his 73 turned out to be one of the best scores of the round.

Fellow Aussie Cameron Smith (+3) also had a 73, while Adam Scott (+4) had an Even par round to be eight-strokes back. Marc Leishman (+7) and Steven Bowditch (+17) both missed the cut.

Leader, Jordan Spieth was unusually flustered during parts of his round and felt like he was being rushed once his group was ‘put on the clock’ for being too slow. Despite two bogeys in a row on 16 and 17 he held a clutch putt on 18 to stay one stroke ahead of Rory McIlroy. The pair to play in the final group on ‘moving day.’

Round Preview:

Jordan Spieth heads into the second round of the US Masters with a lead of two strokes after a scintillating first round 66 at Augusta National. Join us on The Roar from 6am AEST for live updates and scores.

Adam Scott will feature in the final group of round two and will be hoping he can improve significantly from his four-over par 76 in the first round.

It’s not unusual for the second round to offer up a few surprises with players known to make a big charge from well back. The record for most birdies in one round occurred on the Friday in 2009 when Anthony Kim made 11.

Marc Leishman is also in one of the later groups, while Jason Day is the best placed Aussie at even par.

Round two is all about players positioning themselves for the weekend, whether it’s to make the cut or to make it into one of the final groups for moving day.

Expect the pin placements to be slightly tougher and the greens to be slightly firmer than round one.
