One team’s chance at history will end as the Golden State Warriors (71-9) travel to Texas to face the San Antonio Spurs (65-14). Catch all the action on The Roar from 9am (AEST) with live scores and coverage.

This is it. The big one.

The Spurs have the opportunity to become the first team in NBA history to remain undefeated at home during the regular season.

If you haven’t heard that the Warriors are chasing the all-time wins record of 73, then you’ve been living under a rock in the desert, probably somewhere outside San Antonio!

One of them loses that chance today, and it makes this quite possibly the most exciting game of the 2015-16 regular season.

They’ve faced off three times already, two wins for Golden State in Oakland and the other a Spurs victory in San Antonio – these are the two toughest venues for any team to visit.

The Spurs’ win came down to excellent defence in keeping the game’s most prolific scorers to 79 points. This was decidedly absent from their most recent encounter last week.

Whether it was down to the Warriors’ spectacular offence or the Spurs just having an off day on that end, the Spurs were just unable to stop Golden State – giving up a comfortable 11-point difference in the end.

I for one refuse to exclude the possibility that it was all one big mind game on Coach Popovich’s part for if or when they meet in the playoffs. His tactics are beyond that we mere mortals can comprehend.

Several Spurs players are on record claiming the home-court record means nothing to them and that this game amounts to nothing more than preparation for the playoffs – maybe.

But whatever their motivation, they won’t be taking it easy.

Neither will the Warriors, who have made it abundantly clear that they want those 73 wins.

I don’t think they will get them though. The Spurs should win this one. They have lost two on the trot away from home, Golden State and Denver (where they rested several key players), and they will surely want to string some wins together before the post-season kicks off.

This leaves me thinking the Warriors will equal the Bulls’ record with 72 wins when they play Memphis later in the week. Steve Kerr can then claim the record as both a player and coach – maybe that was his plan all along?

Either way enjoy what should be a spectacular game between the two best basketball teams on the planet.
