Canelo Alvarez knocked out Amir Khan in the sixth round of their fight in Las Vegas today, allowing Alvarez to retain the WBC middleweight title.
REPORT: ALVAREZ STOPS KHAN IN 6 ROUNDS
Khan appeared to be doing well in the fight until Canelo landed a big right hand on him which put an end to the battle.
The aftermath of their fight saw Canelo encourage speculation of a fight with Gennady Gennadyevich Golovkin, ‘Triple G’, in the future.
Canelo Alvarez and Amir Khan will meet today in Las Vegas as Khan challenges for Alvarez’s WBC middleweight title. Join The Roar for round-by-round updates and a live blog of the fight, starting from 1pm AEST.
25-year-old Alvarez currently holds the WBC, The Ring magazine and lineal middleweight titles, and will concede all of them to Khan if he loses this fight. He is ranked by BoxRec not only as the best middleweight but also as the No.1 boxer in the world, pound for pound.
From a total of 48 fights, he boasts a record of 46 wins, 32 of them by knock out. The only flaws in that record are a draw to Jorge Juarez in 2006, and his loss to Floyd Mayweather in 2013.
29-year-old Amir Khan on the other hand holds the WBC Silver Welterweight title but is jumping up here to give himself a chance at what would be the biggest achievement of his career.
He has a record of 31 wins, 19 by knock out, and just three losses, the most recent being to Danny Garcia in 2012.
This is the biggest fight of the year. Khan has jumped two weight classes and is putting possibly his last chance at the top tier on the line after career-damaging losses to Garcia and Lamont Peterson.
Canelo is the bigger fighter. He destroyed James Kirkland but looked slow and useless against Mayweather. Somewhere in between is Amir Khan, the fastest hands in Britain.
Dan Rafael of ESPN states “Canelo is bigger, stronger and younger and while I think Khan will give it a great effort and be more competitive than some think he might be, Canelo will win by knockout in the middle rounds.”

All the doctors are in the ring. Khan is awake but he does not look healthy. Canelo was just waiting all fight. Khan looked impressive early but Alvarez wanted him to get confident and then he hit his timing. The right hook, almost the mirror image of the Garcia left ends the fight. Khans eyes rolled back, the ref did the right thing.
