Melbourne Storm lock Cameron Munster in until 2019.

By News / Wire

Melbourne have locked in exciting fullback Cameron Munster’s services until the end of the 2019 NRL season.

The 21-year-old has played 28 games since making his debut in 2014 and has grabbing the opportunity presented by Billy Slater’s injury woes to show his wares in the No.1 jersey.

“I decided to stay here because Melbourne gave me my first opportunity,” said Munster, who has played all nine games this season, scoring three tries and averaging 169 metres a game.

“They have done a lot for me and my improvement in my game and also it is a great city to live in.”

While Munster is heir apparent to Slater, 2017 might present coach Craig Bellamy with a selection dilemma.

Slater has had two shoulder reconstructions in less than a year but intends to return for next season, which is expected to be his last.

It means his outstanding understudy could face a move to the halves or centres.

Rockhampton-born Munster will play in his home state on Saturday when the Storm take on North Queensland as part of the double-header at Suncorp Stadium.

Munster joins teammates Tim Glasby and Christian Welch who have both recently extended their contracts with the club.

Good move Melbourne in signing the lad. Now I want to whinge about a 1 city club playing their home games away from that city. You can dress it up Melbourne but anyway you look at it, it isn't fair on your fans or on the rugby league people living in Victoria who are now reduced to watching just 11 live games a season. No other clubs to watch, no Origin games, no internationals, no city/country. I thought that Melbourne was a RL development area ? What on earth are you thinking ?

Great move by Melbourne -- Munster is already a quality fullback and will only get better. That supposed headache with Slater isn't really a problem based on recent seasons; Slater will no doubt be injured by the business end of the season, offering him another contract was a mistake especially if it means they can't find the money to keep Cronk next year.
