The 2016 Doomben Cup has a quality field of 14, with some exciting prospects.

The first runner I am keen to have a look at is Hauraki, trained by John O’Shea. This galloper was the beaten favourite last start, when outsider Leebaz claimed victory by one length. The extra 200 metres should suit Hauraki, and if he gets a dry track he definitely goes in my first four selections.

Leebaz, who defeated Hauraki last start, is at a good price. While he doesn’t have the greatest record at the distance, he did win the Group 3 Easter Cup at Caulfield three starts back, and is an on-speed galloper who always puts himself in the race. One for the wider quaddies.

Noble Protector, from Victoria, has the ability but has been hit-and-miss lately. Last time out we saw her run third at Randwick in a Group 1 mile race. But she has trialed nicely, finishing second to Our Ivanhowe, who also runs in this race. She’s in the mix here.

Lady Le Fay, from the all-conquering Chris Waller yard, seems to go well on all surfaces, but doesn’t mind the sting out of the track, which would be the best hope of this girl winning. Two starts ago she won over the same distance, defeating Weary, but last start she lost by 1.5 lengths to the Gai Waterhouse-trained Ecuador.

The exciting Raw Impulse, from the mighty Darren Weir yard, has been awesome in his first three Australian starts. Impressive each time he has stepped out and up in distance, this galloper should handle the quick back-up and looks to be the winner. He defeated Golden Mane by 2.75 lengths last start to make it three on the trot in Australia.

Selections
