Ricciardo rages after tyre bungle costs him at Monaco

A furious Daniel Ricciardo has slammed his Red Bull team after a shambolic pit stop cost him victory at the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday.

The usually mild-mannered West Australian, who started the race on pole position, failed to contain his anger after finishing second behind world champion Lewis Hamilton following a bungled tyre change due to a communication breakdown between the team’s mechanics and and engineers.

Ricciardo was leading the race when he was ordered into the pits only to find the tyres were not ready.

The seven-second delay that ensued allowed Hamilton to take control of the race and hold on for his first win of the season in wet conditions.

It was the second time in as many races Ricciardo has been denied victory due to a mistake by his team following the strategy error that handed the win to Dutch teammate Max Verstappen at the Spanish GP two weeks ago.

“Two weeks in a row I’ve been screwed,” Ricciardo told the team over the radio after the chequered flag.

“It sucks. I was called into the box. They should have been ready. Nothing you can say can make it any better. Just save it.”

Ricciardo said he had no idea what happened and cut morose figure on the podium as Hamilton celebrated his success.

“I didn’t make the call, I got called,” he said.

“They should have been ready. It hurts. I don’t have anything else to say to be honest.”

I realise Rosberg was 2-3 seconds a lap slower than Ricciardo, which means Hamilton was 2-3 seconds a lap faster than Rosberg. When the shoe was on the other foot in Hungary 2014, Hamilton's retort was “I’m not letting him past me; if he gets close enough to overtake he can overtake.” The British media were all for Hamilton blatantly ignoring a team order. That day in Hungary, Hamilton had no chance of winning, only Rosberg. Hamilton defiance cost Mercedes a Rosberg victory in the end. Any way, all genuine smiles again at Mercedes after that Hamilton win. No forced smiles this weekend. Normal service has resumed. British media are nauseating. Damon Hill put it up there with Senna's win at Donnington in 1993. Are you kidding me? Hamilton had to rely on a teammate moving over for him, Red Bull completely bungling regulation a pit stop, and a dirty chop after making an error missing a chicane If not for that, Ricciardo cruises from pole to a crushing victory at Monaco. What the race proved is that Rosberg is merely the third best German driver on the grid, and he may now be the 4th best. It's possible that Wehrlein has surpassed Rosberg. These three consecutive Hamilton championships will be viewed as having an asterisk against them. It's been the most dominant car in the history of the sport and his only foil in those three seasons was the 3rd (or 4th) best German driver on the grid. It's safe to say that someone like Ricciardo would be destroying Hamilton in equal equipment. As for Verstappen, two weeks ago the talk was of him being a multiple times champion at the top of the sport for the next 20 years. Comparisons were made to Schumacher when he arrived on the scene in 1991. If Ricciardo can put in similar performances over the coming months then Verstappen's F1 career (at a top team) could be over before it even begins. Maybe it was a case of not coping with a new kind of pressure, Ricciardo did have the new power unit so maybe Verstappen was over driving trying to make up the difference. We'll soon now. Finally, in Spain, the British media dissected the Rosberg/Hamiton incident (which was completely Hamilton's fault) with the thoroughness of a forensic investigation and still some how found Rosberg at fault. The Hamilton chop on Ricciardo wasn't mentioned at all in the Sky post-race coverage. 100% Hamilton's fault, dirty, if Ricciardo doesn't back out Hamilton hits him. Hamilton maintained position missing a chicane and chopping Ricciardo. Ricciardo lost a lot of momentum after that incident.

Yes to Jaime's clarification.2 to 3 stop change was at Barcelona while the pit stop nonsense was Monaco - two races in a row chances at victory squandered by the support team. Hamilton would not have caught Riccardo had he been out in a 7-8s pitstop instead of a 13-14s one. Barcelona is more of a maybe scenario but last night at Monaco was a lock first place gone begging.

Hey King, I think Kev was reffereing to the 3 stop stratergy in Spain, not the stops last night. Again that essetially handed Max the race win, certaininly not his better driving skills. As for last night.... Very, very disappoininting. Dan had establighed what should of been a race wining lead and saw it evaporate due to the incompetance of the team (which i don't believe or a simple miscommunication (the more likely scenario). Chin Up Dan, you time will come.

Pretty poor form from Ricciardo. He was given the faster motor for the weekend and got second at Monaco. He may never get there again, tough. There are always maybes in a race, so he may have won, or more likely Hamilton would have caught him anyway and dived up the inside taking them both out. He probably would have preferred that scenario. But anyway, second at Monaco is excellent. Webber was a always a number 2 driver, but quick over a lap. Not in the same class of driver as Vettel, Hamilton, Alonso. The fact that Hamilton likes Ricciardo suggests that he thinks he has his measure. That is the way of F1.

Kev, while I am appalled at the bungled pit stop, and lets be clear it did stop any chance he has of winning the race, being on the three stop strategy, with a normal professional pit stop taking place instead of the bungled mess we saw, would have seen Daniel rejoin the race with a 10 - 12 second lead over Hamilton and the all important track position in Monaco. The 14 seconds he was stationery in that pit stop cost him track position and the win. There was nothing wrong with the strategy.

When drivers are pushing the car hard and make a mistake and put the car in the wall the team is usually supportive. Occasionally they do it too often they drop the offending driver down to their junior team. Here and in Spain the team were pushing the strategy hard to get the best outcome and got it wrong. At Monaco they called the pitstop late and changed the tire to go on even later. Dan needs to pour himself a big cup of perspective - he is fighting for wins not scraps. And that is down to a lot of hard work by people across the whole of the Redbull team.

Changing weather conditions lead to the change in stop stragey and all the top contenders besides Hamilton had a three stopper. I can handle your call on incompetence but i want you to stop and think for a moment about your claim it could have been sabotage. You are actually claiming that Red Bull sabotaged their own car, so that Hamilton would win for a rival team?

oh please, a mistake was made and someone should lose their job but to claim that Red Bull "hates" Australians is complete rubbish. You obviously have no idea what you are talking about if you think the race strategy engineers came up with the "strategy" to leave him him sitting in the pit while they grab tyres.
