What better way to celebrate the impending 2016 Rio Olympics than by recalling some of the greatest and most memorable events in Olympic history? With 50 days to go, we’ll start our countdown to Rio with the man who started Australia’s Olympic legacy.
Athens 1896 was the first modern Olympics. Back then though, the Australian Olympic Committee didn’t exist – Nick Kyrgios would have loved it.

Unfortunately, no AOC meant just one Aussie competed at Athens: Edwin Flack.
Technically, Flack was competing as a member of the London Athletic Club, but he decided to don the colours of the Old Melburnians Athletics Club.
If the have-a-go spirit is embodied in any Australian Olympian, it is surely in Flack. He won two golds on the track – in the 800 and 1500-metre races – and then decided to try his hand at a few other events.
He’d never run a marathon before, but, just a day after his 800 metres victory, was leading the long-distance race, before dropping out after 34 kilometres. Flack also competed in the tennis and, with the help of his English partner George Robinson, took home a bronze medal in the men’s doubles.
By the end of the Games, Flack had earned the nickname ‘The Lion of Athens’. After competing in two different sports and winning three medals, it’s hardly undeserved.
