Adelaide Crows vs North Melbourne Kangaroos highlights: AFL scores, blog

By Matthew Walsh / Roar Guru

The mid-season schedule of Thursday night matches begins when the Adelaide Crows take on the North Melbourne Kangaroos at the Adelaide Oval. Join The Roar for all the action from 7:50pm AEST.

The two teams are coming off vastly different preparations, the Crows with a 12 day break after a season best victory over the West Coast Eagles by 29 points in Perth, the Kangaroos on the other hand are coming off two six day breaks and two losses to the well-credentialed sides in Geelong and Hawthorn.

Added to this the fact the club has had to deal with off field controversy following Brad Scott’s post match press conference after the Hawthorn game. Scott raised issues with umpire biases but the club and Scott were both forced into unreserved apologies after it was determined the allegations were incorrect. On Wednesday, the club was issued from the AFL with a fine of $50,000 and Brad Scott received a fine of $30,000.

These two sides have already met this year in Round 1. North Melbourne came from behind, storming home in the second half to win by ten points.

Todd Goldstein was best on ground in that match and his match up against Sam Jacobs will once again be crucial.

Both sides are well entrenched in the top eight – North Melbourne are third with a 10-3 record and the Crows, with a game in hand, are eighth with an 8-4 win loss ratio.

The Kangaroos are having their depth severely tested with injuries at the moment. Daniel Wells (ankle) and Luke McDonald (hamstring) have been added to the increasing injury list. McDonald’s hamstring which was incurred after a terrific chase of Cyril Rioli has required surgery and he looks certain to miss an extended period. The club are hopeful he will return for the finals campaign.

On the positive side of things, two premium midfielders return in Ben Cunnington from a corked quad and the captain, Andrew Swallow, from concussion. Jarrad Waite was not able to prove his fitness with a hip complaint.

The Crows injury list is currently one of the shortest in the AFL. Paul Seedsman is the only change with a hamstring injury. He has been replaced by Brad Crouch whose form in the SANFL could not be overlooked where he had 40 possessions and ten tackles.

Prediction
This promises to be a cracking match to open the round. Being away from home, the two six day breaks and injuries will require a monumental effort for the Kangaroos to win. However, teams coming off a bye have historically struggled but believe Adelaide will be just too strong.

Adelaide Crows by 16 points.

Join The Roar from 7:50pm (AEST) as we bring you all the action from this Round 14 clash.

@Perry Bridge. With the wet conditions (no rain in game but a very wet oval), I always had that as a 50/50 game last night. Just relieved to have got the win and yes bad kicking is bad football, but fortunately this season, the crows have not had too many poor kicking days at the office. The final margin very much flattered a tired North based on scoring shots alone, understanding the 2 x 6 day breaks and injuries

#Swannies Crows should have flogged us by 10 goals this week - just as we should have flogged Hawthorn by 5-10 goals last week had we kicked straight (then we wouldn't be pretenders). Which way do you argue on inaccurate kicking?

There were big similarities to North the week before against Hawthorn - had North pinched the game then I wonder how much talk would have been of North stealing it or the Crows losing it. Last week there was a lot of "Hawthorn just hang in and find a way to win" talk. But - that's footy - bad kicking is bad footy. 6 pt margin at 3/4 time but as a North fan - with the consecutive 6 day breaks (and in this case 6 days plus travel) - against a team at home fresh off the bye - - and perhaps importantly - NO RAIN - I had little faith in our ability to finish on top (like we did in Round 1). Ironically I was disappointed driving home hearing that North had replaced Daw with Nahas - - even if it rained I thought the physical presence of Daw would be an asset. As it was - Petrie was ineffectual and Brown the only marking threat up forward and when he went into the ruck we had nothing up forward (Wood is going okay but more of a lead up). Goldstein is looking very tired and lost his edge. My concern is that North to have any reasonable hope for the rest of the year really should invest heavily in Daw because if he gets going not many teams will be able to go with him.

Was at the game and the crows shocking goal kicking kept north in it most of the night. To have dropped that game after having an avalanche of scoring shots could have been a season wrecker confidence wise. Shaking my head thinking if they had kicked straighter it would have been a demolition and big % booster

It may have been Nahas who did practically nothing. The Crows would have enjoyed that selection mistake.

North made a late change - brought in a smaller player (whose name escapes me) presumably because of the dire weather forecast.

Yep...North were kept in the game by Crows' inaccuracy until 3/4 time. Bye can't come soon enough for North who looked out on their feet in the final quarter. Scott seemed optimistic in the press conference but we're facing a real battle now to stay in the top-4 now - can't afford to drop more than 2 games in the run home by my reckoning if we want the double-chance. Of course no one rates us a chance now!

I didn't see Majak Daw at all tonight. Was he dropped? I thought he had a fair game in the ruck against Hawthorn last week and would have provided good back up to Goldstein tonight who I thought was beaten by Jacobs. The Crows were impressive in the second half. Pointing out the bleedin obvious but the Kangas would have been obliterated if the Crows had kicked straight. Kangas look shot at the moment - they need Wells and Waite back pronto. And for goodness sake give Daw some game time - he could be anything.

North...you're wasting your time preparing for finals. You almost had us fooled after round 9 that you were a half-decent side! Crows should have flogged you by 10 goals tonight. Are you prepared to gamble and get rid of your whinging coach and retire a few players who have seen better days and blood some youth. Or are you going to follow in Fremantle's footsteps with your aging list?

North done. Frightening average age of the list. Looking at a total rebuild and decimation of the list.
