Tex Walker, please stay out of the Eddie McGuire controversy

I love Taylor ‘Tex’ Walker as a player and so do his fans. I first met him in his early years when I worked with him on a professional basis and I have met him a number of times since.

He’s a good bloke, and clearly a very popular player among the team.

From what I gather he has a very strong and credible voice on the field, and as captain one would expect that.

But Tex also has a very strong influence and presence within the social media world. He has a very impressive twitter account number. Would you believe he has 80,000 followers?

But today Taylor became embroiled in a Twitter tirade after he tweeted he was sick of hearing about Eddie McGuire’s attack on Caroline Wilson.

The Collingwood president was forced to apologise a number of times this week after he said he’d pay $50,000 to see Fairfax footy writer Caroline Wilson “stay under” in an ice water pool at the MCG.

He also called Wilson, a “black widow” who sucks people in and then “bang – she gets ya”.

McGuire’s comments, and remarks from North Melbourne president James Brayshaw and former St Kilda great Danny Frawley, did not impress the AFL, and drew a strong rebuke from the AFL,

The comments began to filter in faster than you can say the word mullet

And at one stage he called a Crows fan a ‘peanut’ and accused a woman of bullying.

Taylor we love you, but I do not feel that there is anything to be gained by you getting into a Twitter fight with anyone, particularly a Crows fan.

Tex has since said he doesn’t condone Mcguire’s comments. To be fair, that goes without saying, but here’s the thing.

Overall, 99 per cent of Tex’s tweets will be seen as positive. For example I am sure he has tweeted footy tips to young players, his thoughts to those in need or those who are suffering, or his views on social issues.

Many of his tweets are informing and humorous. However, the one percent that catches the eye of media outlets will be highlighted. And that’s what has happened with the Adelaide Advertiser running this story online. And of course that’s their job.

We love it when you kick goals for the Crows Tex, but some cringe when you boot one out of bounds on the full on Twitter.

Tex was involved in another Twitter feud last year when he called Aussie tennis star Nick Kyrgios a ‘galoot’ for his on-court behaviour.

Although I must admit when I saw that tweet I did agree with the great man, it is not his place to start these kinds of battles.
