Match preview:

The group stage is now over and the first Round of 16 game at Euro 2016 will see Switzerland play Poland in Saint-Etienne. Join us on The Roar from 11pm AEST for all of the action and see who can book their spot in the quarter-finals.

Despite three rather lacklustre group stage performances, Switzerland escaped Group A undefeated and sitting pretty in second.

An opening game 1-0 win over Albania, 1-1 draw with Romania and gritty goalless draw with France sealed Switzerland’s progression to the knockout stage.

Fabian Schar’s early goal against Albania provided an ideal start to the Swiss campaign but they’ve since stalled, having to come from behind to draw with Romania and then lucky to hold on against France. They’ll be hoping and indeed needing to do better from here on to keep their Euro 2016 journey alive.

Keep an eye on star midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri, who’s had a quite Euro so far, bursting into life when it matters most.

Heading into the competition, Poland’s main assets seemed to be in attack but so far it’s been all about defence for the Poles.

Yet to concede a goal, Poland held 2014 World Cup winners Germany to a goalless draw while grinding out narrow 1-0 wins over Northern Ireland and the Ukraine respectively.

Surprisingly sturdy at the back, Poland’s main concern is a misfiring frontline. Star striker Robert Lewandowski has been kept very quiet in front of goals and will really need to roar into life now if Poland are to trouble a Swiss side who have conceded just the one goal to date.

This is the first time in Euro history either side has made it to the knockout stage and if history is anything to go by, Poland are the more likely to go one step further.

In the ten games these sides have played, Switzerland have won just one with Poland winning four and the other five drawn.

So will it be the Swiss or Poles who are the first team to book their spot in the Euro 2016 quarter-finals?

Join us on The Roar to find out as Switzerland and Poland face off in the first knockout game of Euro 2016.
