In a move that has surprised the football world, the FA has announced that Gordon Bombay will be the next coach of the England football team.

Reeling from the embarrassment of the loss to Iceland the FA moved quickly to secure his services.

The task confronting Bombay will be immense, especially considering he has never coached a senior football team before, but the FA has expressed its utmost confidence that Bombay is the man to lead the English to long-awaited glory.

While many were surprised at the announcement of a hockey coach – an American no less – few doubt his CV and that his name is the benchmark for success.

Bombay gained fame after turning the 1991 District 5 hockey team from a rag tag team of misfits into an international champion team in the space of only two seasons. A feat that bestowed upon him the nickname of ‘Minnesota miracle man’. England fans will be expecting a repeat of those miracles.

For all the plaudits that Bombay has received, it can’t be denied that there is an element of controversy regarding his questionable coaching tactics. Bombay has faced allegations of players using illegal sporting equipment, an over-emphasis on thuggery and deliberate deception that some feel have stepped into the realms of bad sportsmanship. Bombay has strenuously denied he has a “win at all costs” approach to team sport.

However, what cannot be discounted is Bombay’s ability to do what other managers have failed to do: beat Iceland. He clearly knows the secret to overcoming the land of fire and ice and the FA will be expecting him to deliver.

Rumours are rife that Bombay has already hired one of his Scandinavian mentor’s Jan – brother of famous Hans – as an assistant coach. Known for bringing the best of out players he is rumoured to already have spent time with Harry Kane teaching him that kicking free kicks into the crowd doesn’t equal a goal, and instructing Joe Hart to parry the ball away from the goal.

When asked Bombay would neither confirm or deny the rumours.

When asked of Bombay’s appointment, there was excitement in the England camp. Jamie Vardy said, “We feel honoured that we have the opportunity to play under Bombay. I’m looking forward to getting on the training pitch and perfecting the Flying V”.
