Federer is coming off maybe his best ever comeback victory when he came from two sets down to defeat ninth seed Marin Cilic.

Federer really had no right to win that match but went up the gears like only he can and proved himself to be a class above Cilic and probably most players on the tour.

At 34 years of age, though, the biggest question is whether he will have anything left in the tank to back it up with another big performance here. If the Fed Express is going to win this one and advance to another grand slam final then it will be on the back of a strong start and a quick victory.

A quick victory though, against the sixth seed Milos Raonic who has been in fine form, will be incredibly hard to come by, and while Federer hadn’t played more than three sets in the first four rounds, that quarter-final will have taken it out of him.

Raonic, of course, is known for his monster serve and even though he has never made it to a grand slam final, he has played in semi-finals twice – once at Wimbledon and earlier this year at the Australian Open.

The other thing you have to consider is that Raonic has played one five-setter, one that went to four and the rest in straight sets. He to had to come from two sets down against David Goffin in the fourth round, before he dismantled Sam Querrey in the quarter-final.

With his big serve, it will be down to how Federer handles it and changes the momentum and rhythm of the points, using his sliced backhand effectively. That, and moving Raonic around the court a lot from the baseline, will be Federer’s best chance.

Federer dominates the head-to-head between the pair, leading the ledger 9-2 although Raonic won their only meeting so far this year in straight sets during the final of the Brisbane International.

They have met twice on grass, with Federer winning both meetings although they were in 2012 and 2014 respectively, so it’s hard to say they have much of an influence predicting a result here.

Prediction
If Federer has anything left in the tank and finds a way to go up the gears, then he wins this. However, it’s doubtful that will happen, and with Raonic’s big serve he could find himself down and out again.

Raonic in four sets.
