We need to pick up tempo: Brumbies coach

By Roje Adaimy / Roar Guru

A bruised and battered Brumbies know they have no choice but to lift against the Western Force next weekend with their Super Rugby finals hopes on a knife’s edge.

The ACT franchise are perilously close to missing the playoffs for the first time in four years after being thrashed 40-15 by New Zealand’s bottom-ranked Blues in Auckland on Friday.

They conceded four tries in the opening 21 minutes and failed to respond, relying on their setpiece and rolling maul but struggling elsewhere in attack.

The defeat opens the door for the NSW Waratahs to overtake them on the ladder and win the Australian conference.

“And that’s basically where you’ve got to finish to get to the finals,” coach Stephen Larkham said.

“That’s obviously important for us now.”

The Brumbies host the lowly Force at GIO Stadium next Saturday night in a must-win final regular-season match.

Larkham said fatigue probably played a role in the loss to the Blues, given the travel to Auckland and short turnaround for his Wallabies ahead of last week’s win over Queensland.

“There’s plenty of excuses we can throw out there,” he added.

“I think there’s maybe one or two positive things but about 10 things we’ve got to work on.

“We’ll put everything into this week. We have an eight-day turnaround which gives us a nice weekend off and a full week’s prep starting on Monday.

“We want to get to the end of the week next week and say we’ve got no excuses for not playing well.”

Co-captain Christian Lealiifano said the Brumbies’ confidence would no doubt take a hit for what he labelled a “pretty humbling” experience against the Blues.

“When you’re a little bit off, a team like that can punish you – and that’s the nature of Super Rugby,” he said.

“We’ve spoken about it all year, to control what we can and that’s the next game.

Winger Joe Tomane is a chance of returning to face the Force after being eased by via club rugby on Saturday, but superstar flanker David Pocock is likely to remain sidelined with a fractured eye socket.

How exactly does one qualify as doing "nothing in attack" while scoring two tries and assisting with eight more? He has also averaged a respectable 60 run metres per game and I have seen some good wins in kicking duels up the left hand sideline with his left boot.

Larkham is a favourite son of the Brumbies, and as you know favourite sons can do no wrong. The Brumbies fell into the trap of believing that the ability to play the game very well is easily transferred to being able to coach the game, very well. Coaches, just like players but probably more so, need to learn their craft. But being a favourite son this did not apply. He might develop into an excellent coach over time with more experience but we saw the limitations in the Wallabies attack v England and now we see the overall limitations of the Brumbies: they weren't evident in the first game of the season v the canes, but for some reason they shelved that attacking mindset to kick mindlessly and look for rolling mauls. The Chiefs game really showed up their limitations and nothing seems to have been done about it, as the Blues game demonstrated: i just don't think they were ready for the offloading and short kicks behind the defence, and they should have been. And annoyingly the Brumbies are a team with poor discipline, as if the players don't know the rules and don't believe in listening to the ref. Why has this been allowed to become a part of their game? Some of this must be sheeted home to coaching.

don't agree - Toua is THE worst fullback in the Super Comp. He's not Super Rugby standard imo. Offers nothing in attack, has ordinary kicking game & is error prone.

hey I never said it was an excuse - Cheifs have far better depth than Brumbies - that makes them a better team :)

His kicking has been poor all year.

Toua does well in attack, 2 tries and 8 assists this season, and he can kick but his defence at 45%. He needs intensive work on that during the NRC season.

The Brumbies need a top line Fullback! I don't know who that is, but they need one badly.

At the present time Larkham is not a 'Super'-level coach! Yes the Brumbies have had injuries, like most teams, but he should have been able to do more with the players he has. The Brumbies might scrape into the Finals, but in reality they should not have been doing it so tough!

The sad thing is that for all the criticisms of Larkham, when one of his attacking moves comes together it is really impressive. I have seen a couple of backline moves this year off the lineout, where all the ball and dummy runners were in synch in a movement that was virtually impossible to defend against. He just doesn't seem to be able to get the team doing that consistently.

They might still be in the finals by doing nothing. Such is the deal we have. If I ever became a gambling idiot I would back the blues over the waratahs next week all day.

The Chiefs would appear to have had more injury problems than any other side this year and it doesn't seem to have affected them

Agree, Although I’m just a person who enjoys a good rugby spectacle, the question needs to be explored. Why is Larkham the Wallabies “backs” coach. When this own franchises, the Brumbies display precious little imagination or creativeness in this area. Regardless of the fact ,the gent was once a very skillful Wallaby, this knowledge has not transcended, we have not witnessed such ingenuity or inventiveness a necessary ingredient at this level. The team only appears to search for the opposing 5m line and pray for a positive result from a mull or some other structured forward move. Further, without been to critical or name calling, the backline were far from clinical, were simple to read and displayed little individual enterprise, that could have changed the direction of the match. As a sport, we need to understand the Kiwi’s are changing the dynamics; they continually desire 5 /7 pointers not 3. They live off broken play and the ball been kicked their way, this is like milk and honey. We need to appraise their style of play and develop the obligatory changes to at least challenge their ability to capitalize on fractured or broken play. We have been much to slow to recognize we are treading water.

I would like to know who was running the Brumbies sessions during the break. When you look at the Brumbies overall season all the losses have been hidings

Yeah agree, it does seem that whatever the squads were doing during the break on either side of the Tasman that one side was getting it all wrong.

As a Brumbies fan I agree with a few people here that - Moore is fading fast as a player due to age. - Kuridrani has been poor all year - appears to be just slowing down and also has the Fijian back disease of just running into people - too predictable. But injuries killed the Brumbies season imo & they never had the depth to cover it. Main problem in 2nd half of the season imo is the totally ineffective and error ridden back 3 (plus Coleman). None of them are Super Rugby standard imo and Brumbies have no attacking weapons at the back without Speight, Tomani and Mogg. The loss of Mogg has proved critical & Brumbies did not replace him with a quality fullback. Also loss of Pocock - obviously he can't be replaced but this is no excuse for the coaching staff - just reasons :) Does it really matter who wins the Aussie conference - Tahs or Brumbies - they'll just get beaten by the first NZ team they play in the semi's anyway

Agreed with all of the above Bakkies, especially about Larkham. He should have been doing skills and fitness work with all the non-Wallabies at the Brumbies during the test series.

I think they'll be favourites for next weeks match, and will win. They're getting stronger with every match.
