17 days to Rio: The youngest ever Olympian

A while ago, we looked back at Oscar Swahn, the oldest ever competitor at the Olympics. Today, we recall the youngest, the Greek gymnast Dimitrios Loundras.

Plenty of ten-year-olds have grand dreams of becoming a professional athlete or Olympian. At that age, Dimitrios Loundras not only had that dream, but he was living it.

Back at the first ever Olympics in 1896, Loundras was a part of the Greek gymnastics team. In keeping with the theme of being a considerable overachiever for his tender age, Loundras was good enough to claim a medal, contributing to claiming bronze in the team parallel bars event.

Nit-pickers among you may point out that only three teams took part in the event back in 1896, so technically Loundras was merely a member of a team which came last. But he also had an Olympic medal hanging around his neck, which isn’t too bad an achievement for anyone, let alone someone who hadn’t even hit adolescence.

Aged just ten years and 218 days at the time, Loundras remains the youngest medallist in Olympic history and, unsurprisingly, was the last surviver from the original Athens Games before he passed away in 1971.

He also lived a fairly distinguished life after the Games. He enlisted in the Greek navy, fought in both World Wars, and even managed to reach the rank of admiral.

There is some conjecture that a French boy aged just seven years old competed in the following Olympics in Paris as a coxswain for a Dutch rowing pair.

But given we don’t know his name, or even if he existed for certain, it’s Loundras who will remain as the youngest ever official competitor at the Olympics.
