Bennett and Broncos meet with bad boy Lodge

By News / Wire

Wayne Bennett met with Matt Lodge last weekend as the Brisbane coach confirmed he had an interest in signing the NRL bad boy.

The forward, who has entered a guilty plea over an off-season rampage in New York where he followed and threatened to kill two women last October, has played park football in Sydney’s West this year.

But Bennett said he would be interested in bringing the former Australian under-20s captain to the Broncos if the NRL approved his return.

“I’ve met with Matt, yes, but that’s as far as it’s gone at the moment,” Bennett told News Corp Australia.

“If he comes back on the market, we’d be interested like any other club.”

Bennett has a history of trying to reform the game’s controversial stars, given he tried to sign current Dragons forward Russell Packer two seasons ago.

The news comes after Brisbane prop Jarrod Wallace signed with the Gold Coast on Thursday.

Lodge faces paying a potential $US2 million ($A2.68 million) in damages from the night in New York, while he was also charged with domestic violence last year.

The NRL said it would need to see the 21-year-old undergo rehabilitation and show he had overcome his issues before they would let him sign with an NRL club.

Interesting comment on Curtis Sironen, I've wondered where he's got to lately,. Broncos definitely need to get some bigger & younger back rowers to build on to their potential in the halves, he'd be a good pick up and might appreciate being away from the Sydney spotlight on his surname. Lodge might be ok on ability but not for the culture you want to build, bit like the reason Corey Norman wasn't retained.

Hes facing 2.7 million damages charges, followed and threatened to kill two women, yet he may be playing in the NRL soon? Doesn't matter what a player does, you will get a reprieve if your a good player. Incredibly sad, given the NRL's stand on women in League. Incredibly sad but not surprised
