Hawthorn's Hill likely to return to Perth

By News / Wire

Hawthorn’s triple premiership midfielder Bradley Hill is likely to head home to Perth at the end of the AFL season.

Hill met Fremantle coach Ross Lyon this week after being given time off during the Hawks’ 10-day break before Sunday’s game against Richmond at the MCG.

Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson said the club was aware Hill, picked to play against the Tigers, was considering returning to WA after five seasons with the Hawks.

“The bottom line is he’s a West Australian boy, he has family back there and he has a brother (Stephen) who plays for Fremantle. We’ve been aware for five or six weeks and Bradley has spoken to us about it,” the Hawks coach said.

“We want to work through it in a mature way. He’s contracted until the end of next year and we’re not going to let him go easily by any stretch.

“But we’ll try to accommodate it if a deal can be reached at the end of the year.

“There’s every chance he’s going to be at Hawthorn next year and beyond. It’s not a fait accompli that he’s going to go.”

Hill attracted police attention twice this year, including being charged with assault following a suburban nightclub altercation during summer.

Clarkson admitted Hill had found it tough being so far away from his family and support networks.

“It’s (the decision) mainly around family. He has younger brothers and sisters and I suppose the lure of playing with his brother is pretty strong too,” he said.

“We’ll see how it all unfolds over the next few weeks and that will certainly play out at the back end of the year rather than now.”

Hawthorn has provided very little to the rest of the competition. Buddy...and that's it. No one else has been successful at another club. Hawthorn does not develop talent. It just buys and deploys. Croad failed until Freo developed him. Suckling has been a flop. You only played McPharlin for 5 games in 3 seasons. Freo had to develop him. Do you have a name?

Liam, who are all these players you are talking about? Hawks have bought ok players and nurtured them into legends if you ask me. But the key is that the core of our best from 2008 GF and the last 3 premierships are all home grown. If you want to target a team for pillaging players at the top of their game it would surely be Sydney.

Don, I assume your being sarcastic now. By the way, the hawks have lost more mature talent both in players and assistant coaches, than they've bought. Freo could do well from copying hawks hard decisions in early 2000's to sell off older talent to recruit a cohort of young guns.

Freo don't need Hill, they'll do a trade to help out Stephen. But they won't send the first round pick to the Hawks. A player trade maybe, but again I am not sure who Hill replaces in the Freo team. He's not a forward, we have Bennell, Hill, Crozier, D Pearce etc for the outside running positions. Also Darcy Tucker will most likely take that role too. If we keep pick 3 then we get Petrovski-Seton who is a far better prospect than Hill. It's nice that Hill wants to come and play for Freo, but his value to Freo is a third round pick or a trade for Sheridan.

Probably not..We just skim the cream from other clubs to mix in with our current talent.... We will continue to do it ..Hill wont be going anywhere unless we get a great deal...We wont be looking after Brads interests.. Hawthorn the club is more important than an individual..

Consistently winning premierships? That's consistency. Ebbs and flows in individual performance are part of the fluidity of the game and sets them apart from robots. Which is what your umpire and imported players dialogue sounds like. Develop some nuance & balance in your comments Don.

That's all you can name over 12 years? Pretty shallow list.

What has a premiership medal got to do with a player's consistency? Umpiring assistance and imported players provide the only element of consistency there.

Has any club ever won a Grand Final with more players from other AFL clubs than Hawthorn?

Hawks failing to nurture young talents? Rioli Franklin hodge Roughie Lewis Mitchell Stratton Birchall Smith Breust Poppy Shiels . Truckload of them. All still at Hawthorn except Franklin who left with 10m new contract.

Greater consistency than 3 premiership medals by the age of 22? Those Hawks, they just don't develop young talent do they Don. Bradley has struggled with form this year - guess he's practicing his tanking for a job at Freo.

The thing in our favour is Hill is contracted till the end of 17, so if he wants to go the team he goes too has to play ball. If it is Freo, the only option is draft picks for they have nothing of value. Hawthorn might be smart and ask for their number 1 pick of next year, knowing it is a strong draft and anticipating Freo will struggle once more. Maybe a 2nd rounder this year and a 1st rounder next. Or, the deal I suggested. which would be good for them for with Pav going they only have Walters are a trusted forward with the rest complete spuds. With that early pick, we could either use it or try to get OMeara off GCS The other option is deal with the eagles who have many youngsters that the Hawks would covet

yes, tricky isnt it.. dont know much about the other guy, but Duggan really looks like a nice player, beautiful kicking action, soft hands.. he could be a real gem.. I hope we dont trade him. Its a quandary for sure... Fremantle dont have much to offer other than draft picks ... and depends how the eagles are going with their salary cap.. they still have a few guys you would imagine will retire soon, Butler for one... theres a couple of big names struggling with game time and form, Jetta, McKenzie and Brown... Im not sure the Eagles will be trading any of their young guys, their next generation are looking pretty good. Shoenmakers is highly rated by everyone in the AFL, the Dockers could really use him, so maybe that would be the clincher, two first round picks, plus an established quality player.

Agree Lroy If you are Hill and you want success, the Eagles is the place to go for Freo are set up for a major fall . Also, there are a few on the Eagles list that the Hawks would covet- Duggan or even Mutimer who was a gem in juniors As for Freo, their list is so full of deadwood with a gluttony of hasbeens and neverbeens and then little or no young players that really excite you. They remind me of Hawthorn after 2001 where there were so many that had to be shown the door and tough decisions made to go forward. We got Clarko, who made those decisions and the rest is history whereas they have Lyon who will just give cliches and evacuate at the first opportunity offered. Lyon and another 5 year plan at the Tiges???????? Maybe the Hawks will go after their 3-5 draft pick and package a deal of Hill, Shoenmakers and all of Shoenmakers hair care products and tanning lotions......:)

Hill is very low on Freo's radar. While a quality player he has some pretty clear deficiencies, notably an aversion to the hard ball. I wouldn't go as far as saying he's the luckiest triple premiership player in history but he wouldn't be far off. Hawthorns amazing team and skills have allowed him to flourish on the outside. How he would go at another other team would be interesting but I reckon Ross would be waiting till he's a free agent. However, Freo have a history of terrible trading decisions so who knows.

Yes, isnt that the irony... the Eagles have a bunch of guys in the WAFL who are tearing it up and are ready to play AFL .... Fremantle... back to their old ways.. failed to trade their stars when they could have gotten something for them.. now no one is interested in their list... the only thing they have to offer is draft picks... the Hawks have already proved that the way to stay ahead is through bringing in blokes who are already ready to play AFL. So If Hill wants to win another flag, and the Hawks are serious about planning for the future then they will trade with the Eagles.

From the time he has been at Hawthorn to now, he has gradually diminished in output...typical of Hawthorn struggling to nurture young talent. They prefer to buy in developed players from other clubs. Bradley is good and the Freo context will bring greater consistency but Freo must not sell the farm. Morabito, for instance, is the better wingman. High draft picks will land a better player than Bradley Hill. I'll offer Chris Mayne and Zac Clarke and the second round pick for 2018 in exchange for Brad. Better to let him go into the pre-season draft in 2018 with a Freo contract that other clubs won't match. I'm far more interested in getting the McGoverns and Eric McKenzie or Tom Barrass.

It will be a loss for Hill has been a very fine player for the club. one that is a difference maker with his outside run. it will be interesting what we get for him for there is nothing really on the freo list of appeal outside of Fyfe/Neale, and we will not get either of those two. Maybe a draft pick, Hill would be worth say a 10-15 range pick and then package it with a player ( maybe Litherland ) to GCS to get O'Meara. One knows the Hawks will find a way to get the best of the deal
