Two wins on the opening day of the 2016 Rio Olympics has seen Australia’s women’s team book their quarter final spot already.

The favourites for the gold medal opened their campaign with a thrashing of unheralded team Colombia.

The 53-0 result would be followed by something sweeter, though, as they went on to smash Fiji 36-0, underlining their pre-tournament favouritism.

They have now secured their passage to the next round of competition, which starts tomorrow.

Having already accumulated six points, they have secured the top spot ahead of the United States and Fiji.

New Zealand are lurking in Pool B, with both them and France also having secured maximum points in their two games today. In Group C Canada and Great Britain have done the same, also sitting on six points.

Australian coach Tim Walsh spoke to Fairfax Media, and said they aren’t getting ahead of themselves.

“We took a moment to appreciate it. In our team meeting we spoke about the responsibility, not only to our country we’re playing for, but to rugby sevens. And the responsibility that everyone has, men and women, to make sure this game is a sustainable event in the Olympics,” Walsh said.

“I obviously love the game and I think it has got all the attributes and really holds true the core values of the Olympics. We have a responsibility here to show the world what sevens is all about.”

It completed a day of mostly lopsided results, where Great Britain, Canada, France and New Zealand all completed mostly comfortable victories.

But with Australia having beaten the main rival in their pool already, and with the other two pools still to play their marquee game, they do have a slight advantage coming into the final preliminaries and then quarters tomorrow.
