The men’s and women’s 100-metre backstroke finals headline Day 3 of finals action in the pool at the Rio Olympics.

Can Emily Seebohm breakthrough for that elusive individual Olympic gold? Join The Roar from 11am (AEST) for all the action.

Backstrokers Seebohm and Madison Wilson, and on the men’s side Mitchell Larkin are Australia’s best hope for gold as they look to defend the world titles they won in Kazan last year.

Seebohm will aim to avenge the agonising loss she suffered to American Missy Franklin in London after breaking the Olympic record in the semi-finals. Franklin’s absence from the field leaves Danish teenager Mie Nielsen and American Olivia Smoliga as her most likely challengers.

Larkin has a tougher task if he is to end the American domination of the event, which dates back to 1996, with team USA members Ryan Murphy and David Plummer both having overtaken Larkin’s world-leading time at the US trials.

The final of the 200m freestyle looms as one of the most open events on the program, with less than a second separating the top nine swimmers in the world this year. London silver medallist Sun Yang faces strong opposition from James Guy, Paul Biederman and Thomas Fraser-Holmes.

The women’s 100m breaststroke field has been blown wide open, after the banning of Russian Yuliya Efimova for doping. This final looms as a battle between two 19-year-olds, defending champion Rūta Meilutytė of Lithuania and rising American star Lilly King.

Michael Phelps will be in action in the 200 butterfly semi-finals, and the night also features the women’s semi-finals of the 200 freestyle and 200 individual medley.

Today’s schedule
Women’s 200m freestyle: semi-finals
Men’s 200m freestyle: final
Women’s 100m backstroke: final
Men’s 100m backstroke: final
Women’s 100m breaststroke: final
Men’s 200m butterfly: semi-finals
Women’s 200m IM: semi-finals

Prediction
Emily Seebohm should deliver in her favourite event, with Franklin’s absence making it the Aussie’s race to lose.

Ryan Murphy and Rūta Meilutytė will triumph in the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke respectively, while Sun Yang is hard to go past in the 200 freestyle.

Field even at after the butterfly but a strong turn by Hosszu sees her rise to the front.

Hosszu is in action again in the second semi. A gold in this event would establish her as the swimmer of the meet.

Yeah It feels like they are making up excuses for the Australian swimmers, which lets be honest, apart the Horton and women's relay, have all underperformed. And tbh, I wasn't impressed with the mens relay team either, even though they won bronze.

Another olympics another swimming flop. Choking and underperforming. The review after London 2012 missed the point. Australian swimming has a mental problem. The idea that swimmers failed in London because they werent bff's and cheered each other on is moronic. Swimming is an individual sport. Australian swimming needs to do two things. 1. Admit aus swimmers have psychological problem at the Olympics. 2. Move trials closer to the olympics/world champs etc like the US I could be wrong and Australua wins 5 more gold in the pool but I doubt it.

Don't despair yet Australian sports fans, Bronte Barratt and Emma McKeon provided at least one positive for the night qualifying for the final of the 200 Freestyle. Both will be medal chances tomorrow night.

Pathetic comments from teh Aussie commentator. This is the same for every swimmer in every country, why only affecting the Aussies. I am normally very positive but this is dreadful meet since the first day.
