Michael Phelps has won an unprecedented 20th gold medal on Day 4 at the pool, taking victory in the 200-metre butterfly while Kyle Chalmers and Cameron McEvoy both qualified for the final of the 100 metres freestyle.

In winning his 20th gold medal Phelps became the first man over the age of 30 to win a gold medal in an individual swimming event since 1920.

Phelps would edge out Masato Sakai by just .04 of a second. He looked strong through the first 150 metres, before fading at the back end of the race but managing to hang on by the smallest of margins.

The night kicked off with the men’s 100-metre freestyle semi-finals, and the battle to qualify for the flagship event of Swimming at the Games was immense. Nathan Adrian led home the first heat from Cameron McEvoy, with Caeleb Dressel the other qualifier from the first semi-final.

The second semi-final had five qualifiers with young Australian Kyle Chalmers leading home the pack meaning there will be two Aussies in the final tomorrow along side two American’s.

The men’s 4×200 relay final saw Thomas Fraser-Holmes start strongly for Australia, but fade at the back end of the first leg. The United States of America would push into the lead and it was one they never relinquished as Michael Phelps did the final leg from well in front.

Australia would hand over into the 200 in fourth position with Mack Horton anchoring but unable to get Australia a medal as Great Britain and Japan cleaned up second and third.

In the women’s 200 Freestyle final, it was superstar Katie Ledecky who picked up her second gold medal of the games with Emma McKeon picking up the bronze for Australia behind Sarah Sjostorm.

Madeline Groves qualified for the 200 butterfly final with the fastest time and will go into the final tomorrow as heavy favourite, while she will be joined by fellow Aussie Brianna Throssell who had the seventh time.

In the men’s 200 metre backstroke, Ippei Watanabe of Japan would qualify with the fastest time while Katinka Hosszu would win her third gold medal of the Olympics taking out the women’s 200 Individual Medley in a time that gave her the Olympic Record.

Alicia Coutts would finish fifth in the IM, her final individual event at the Olympic Games before retirement and got quite emotional in the interview, saying she was happy that she was able to go out on her own terms after suffering a shoulder injury and almost walking away from the sport.

So, another strong day in the pool for the USA, while Australia with a couple of near misses ending up with a single bronze medal – however, they will be confident for tomorrow with Groves and either McEvoy or Chalmers good chances for gold.
