Olympic swimming highlights: Day 5 results - Men's 100m freestyle final live blog

By Rory O'Sullivan / Roar Pro

The finals of the men’s 200 breaststroke, women’s 200 Butterfly, men’s 100 free and women’s 4x200m freestyle relay will headline Day 5 of swimming competition at Rio Olympics.

Can Cameron McEvoy or Kyle Chalmers become the first Australian to claim gold in the men’s 100m freestyle in 48 years? Join The Roar from 11am AEST to find out as we update the results of each race in our live blog.

The Campbell sisters will also be in action in the 100m freestyle semi-finals, with Cate having broken the Olympic record in the heats earlier this morning.

Bronte will be after some revenge on big sister too – so expect some quick times.

Madeline Groves and Brianna Throssell will appear in the final of the 200m butterfly, with Groves qualifying fastest. Watch for Groves to go out early and take a lead and try to hang on. It should be a cracking race.

But the really big one as far as Australia are concerned is the men’s 100m freestyle. It’s all about Cameron McEvoy, USA’s Nathan Adrian and our own young gun Kyle Chalmers.

McEvoy is the fastest man in the world this year, as well as the world champion. Realistically he’s the favourite, but we all know what Nathan Adrian did to James Magnussen (also the favourite) four years ago.

It was a disappointing day in the pool yesterday, but there should be some better chances today. Follow our live blog right here for updates on the men’s 100m freestyle and plenty more on Day 5 in the pool

Aussies to watch
Cate and Bronte Campbell- 100m freestyle semi-finals
Maddie Groves, Brianna Throssell- 200 butterfly (medal chances)
Cameron McEvoy and Kyle Chalmers- 100m dreestyle (gold medal chance)
Australian women’s 4×200 dreestyle Relay team (medal chance)

Prediction
For the third straight Olympics an Australian will go into the final of the 100m final as favourite.

After a dominant performance in the relay McEvoy has shown he’s not daunted by the occasion. He has the necessary attributes to become Olympic champion.

America will be unbeatable in the 4x200m freestyle relay with Katie Ledecky anchoring.

Looks out for Japanese swimmer Natsumi Hoshi to take 200 Butterfly.

After a slow start Australia Emma McKeon moved Australia to 1st place after the second leg. Bronte Barratt maintained the lead for Australia before Katie Ledecky went past Tamsin Cook in the last 200. 17 year old Cook produced a great swim to not let Ledecky have it all her own way and holding off a fast finishing Canada who finished 3rd.

Great swim by Bronte!! we go into the water first with a .89 lead over the US and Canada. The rest of the field is chasing Australia, they will have to fight hard to medal.

Australia need a big lead at the change if they are to hope for gold, Katie Ledecky could make up 2 or 3 body lengths in the last leg. Australia still lead midway through the 3rd leg by 1/4 of a body length from the US.
