It was ugly, it was sloppy, but the Boomers’ final pool game against Venezuela was enough for Australia to improve to a 4-1 pool record here in Rio.

The Boomers rested Patty Mills, with star point guard Matthew Dellevedova and centre Andrew Bogut playing minimal minutes, as the NBL/European connection getting it done today.

Venezuela needed a win to make the quarters, but didn’t have enough offensively, shooting 17% from the field in the first quarter. It was all up hill from there, as they were chasing a lead for the entire game.

The likes of Joe Ingles, Aron Baynes and Broekhoff were solid, but it was Goulding who was the Boomers’ stand out, scoring 22 points. His three-point shooting looked sharp and may have earned himself some more game time in the latter rounds, with the quarter-finals up next for the Boomers.

For the Boomers, we stand by and wait for results before knowing who will be the opponent in the round of eight. Either way, the Boomers are in fine form, rested, and ready to fire. I smell a medal coming for our Australian boys.

But whatever happens in the later rounds, the margin for the Boomers against Venezuela ends at 25 points, an educated guess pre-game but a good summary of the game that transpired.

Go the Boomers and good luck to every Aussie yet to compete.
